Join school division leaders from across Virginia at the 37th annual VSBA Conference on Education. Attendees will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of mini-workshops which highlight successful practices in Virginia’s school divisions. Participants will leave with many great insights and practical ideas. After the roundtable presentations, attendees will break into regional meetings to discuss pertinent issues coming up for their particular regions.

Loudoun Co. Public Schools responds to special education teachers' claims of sexual assault | WTOP News

The Loudoun County Public School system in Virginia is responding to two educators who say they were retaliated against after reporting being sexually assaulted by a student in their classroom. Erin Brooks, a special-education teacher, and Lauren Vandermuelen, a teacher's assistant, claim they were repeatedly groped and subjected to "overly sexualized behaviors" by the student, and the teachers said their contracts weren't renewed after they spoke out.

BREAKING: Parent worried about active shooter may have brought gun to middle school

(Updated at 2:15 p.m.) A robbery at a convenience store may have led to a panic about an active shooter at a nearby Arlington middle school. It started at the 7-Eleven at 201 S. Glebe Road. Police were dispatched there shortly before 12:30 p.m. for a report of a man with a weapon robbing the store.

Coleman named acting superintendent - The Tidewater News

Starting July 1, Dr. Christopher Coleman will serve as Isle of Wight County Schools' acting superintendent as the School Board continues to evaluate candidates to fill the role permanently. Superintendent Dr. Jim Thornton, who's served in the role since 2015, will retire effective June 30.

Speed cameras in Chesapeake school zones catch more than 1,400 motorists going too fast - in a 2-week span

Chesapeake Police Department issued more than $140,000 in fines from May 18 to May 31 after just two of department's 10 school zone speed cameras went live. The two cameras captured motorists speeding through school zones in the area of Greenbrier Christian Academy and Chittum Elementary School.

Free meals offered at Chesterfield schools for part of this summer

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) - Free breakfasts and lunches will be available to students from June 27 to July 21 at several Chesterfield County Public Schools. Children must be present to receive the meals, and meals must be eaten on site. This is a change from the past couple of years.

Prince William School Board set to vote next week on collective bargaining, but the outcome is unclear

After months of discussion and debate, the Prince William County School Board will vote next week on whether to move forward with collective bargaining, a move that could eventually impact the school division's more than 6,000 teachers and possibly the bulk of the school division's more than 12,000 staff members.

Bedford County school board OKs 'parental rights' resolution, splits on supporting teachers and staff

BEDFORD - The Bedford County School Board deadlocked during Thursday's meeting in a vote on a proposed resolution expressing support of the school division's teachers and staff after voting unanimously to approve a separate resolution expressing support of "parental rights." The board unanimously moved to approve the "parental rights" resolution in a 6-0 vote.

MCPS to host community forums on superintendent search

Montgomery County Public Schools plans to host a number of community input sessions at each of its high schools on Monday and Tuesday to gather feedback on the superintendent search. Community forums will take place at Auburn and Blacksburg high schools at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively, on Monday.

Greer Elementary likely to retain name

Albemarle County's Mary Carr Greer Elementary School is likely to retain its name following a review by the school system's name advisory committee. Albemarle County Public Schools is in the process of reviewing the names of all its schools that are named after individuals to ensure they continue to reflect the school system's values.

Talley gets new contract; city and county schools make personnel changes

The Martinsville School Board and Superintendent Zeb Talley have agreed to a new contract, extending Talley's leadership role through June 30, 2026. Talley has been the superintendent of Martinsville City Public Schools since October 2016. His current employment agreement began on July 1, 2021, and was due to expire on June 30, 2023.
