Growing concern in Virginia with end of free school lunch program

Federal waivers that have allowed every K-12 Virginia student to receive free school meals for the past two years are set to expire at the end of summer, and thousands of students will have to pay for meals again when school begins this fall.

Manassas to continue free student meals

Despite a likely change in federal policy for next school year, Manassas City Public Schools are committing to offer free school meals to each of their nearly 8,000 students during the 2022-23 year. The announcement means that for roughly 34% of those students whose families would not qualify for free or reduced status, meals will remain completely free of charge.

Henrico Schools will host a job fair Thursday, July 14 at Varina Area Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to provide attendees details about job openings. The school system is seeking teachers, substitute teachers, bus drivers, school nutrition services staff members and custodial workers.

Hearing to determine whether books in Virginia Beach school libraries are obscene set for August

A hearing has been set for two books being challenged in Virginia Beach Circuit Court for being obscene for children. However, local bookstores and other organizations are showing support for Barnes & Noble, the authors and publishers to have the challenges dismissed.

Former Montgomery County superintendent has received payments since firing

CHRISTIANSBURG - Former Montgomery County school Superintendent Mark Miear has received a total of $42,674 in check payments between March and June, after his firing, according to records provided by the district. Miear was unanimously fired by the county's school board on March 17 - a termination that was formally "without cause," a specific condition that his last contract with the district suggested entitled him to severance pay.

Resources to help Virginia students facing homelessness

(WFXR) - According to the National Center of Homeless Education, nearly 17,500 homeless children and teens were enrolled in Virginia's public schools during the 2019-2020 academic year. "The definition of homelessness for students is greater than just students who are unhoused or living in shelters," Amherst County Public Schools' supervisor for student and family wellness, Marie Petrone, explained.
