Fairfax County Public Schools to approve recess for middle school

FAIRFAX, Va. (WDVM) - Fairfax County Public Schools are expected to approve a recess requirement for middle school students for the next school year. Superintendent Scott Brabrand says middle school principals are planning for the update to school schedules. The addition of a recess break for students comes with a proposal of a new student and staff health and wellness policy.

Clarke schools revising policies on learning materials

BERRYVILLE - Clarke County Public Schools intend to limit who can voice objections to instructional materials, despite having received no such complaints recently. A revised policy on the "Removal of Materials from Use," adopted by the Clarke County School Board on first reading Monday night, includes a stipulation that only parents and guardians of students in the school division can submit such complaints.

Hanover school board considers pre-Labor Day opening for 2023-24

Hanover County's School Board will consider whether to open school two weeks early for the 2023-24 school year - which could affect families' summer vacation plans. At a work session last week, board members heard a recommendation from staff about the change, which would have school opening on Aug.

Winchester School Board OKs $105M budget proposal

WINCHESTER - A $105 million budget proposal for fiscal 2023 was approved by the Winchester School Board on Tuesday. The plan includes an approximately $66.1 million general operating budget for daily operations, which is comprised of money from local and state taxpayers, and nearly $19.5 million in federal taxpayer grant money.

Collective bargaining sparks debate with Prince William School Board

Disputes are already emerging over the Prince William Education Association's attempts to form a collective bargaining unit with Prince William County Schools. Association leaders have thus far declined to submit the signatures they collected in support of collective bargaining, opting instead to rely on a sworn affidavit attesting to the signatures' authenticity.
