Rockingham County School Board approves 2022-23 budget

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - UPDATE: The board unanimously approved the 2022-2023 budget on Tuesday. The budget will be presented to the County Board of Supervisors Wednesday. After failing to pass a state budget during its regular session, the Virginia General Assembly still has yet to set a date to reconvene and local school divisions aren't waiting around for them.

Local Schools See Slide In COVID-19 Cases

As of Friday afternoon, Harrisonburg City Public Schools reported via its COVID-19 dashboard that there is one active case at Blue Stone Elementary School and one active case at Harrisonburg High School. It's the lowest number of active cases since the pandemic began two years ago.

Nelson County High School Principal Chris Sumner steps down

Nelson County High School Principal Chris Sumner has submitted his resignation in order to pursue other opportunities, Nelson County Public Schools announced. NCHS Assistant Principal Kevin Walker will step in as interim principal through the end of the school year, the school system said.

High school expansion planning going 'in a good direction'

Planning for construction of a new auditorium and renovation at Amherst County High School is gathering momentum, according to school officials. The county is borrowing money for the project and Amherst County Public Schools is committing $8 million toward the overall $19 million expansion.

Henrico County Supervisors hold budget public hearing three weeks ahead of an anticipated approval

A handful of Henrico County residents spoke about the proposed budget and tax relief programs at a public hearing Tuesday evening. While some residents had concerns over increased real estate assessments, a couple of Richmond-area nonprofits, Community Brain Injury Services and Caritas, thanked the county for its continued funding.

A new Radford City Public Schools program will enable more children to enter the classroom ready to learn, says Superintendent Rob Graham. The Kinder Camps program will be supported by Carilion Clinic and administered by United Way of Southwest Virginia (UWSWVA).

Ground broken on GWHS, track renovations

Danville School leaders joined Averett University officials Tuesday to break ground on a project that will benefit both. Work is already underway to build a state-of-the-art NCAA-grade track facility at J.T. Christopher Stadium on the campus of George Washington High School.

Hampton school officials vote to start year before Labor Day

HAMPTON - After considering a new start date for at least two years, classes in Hampton will begin before Labor Day this fall. School Board members voted unanimously Wednesday night to approve the academic calendar for the next school year.
