Teacher Job Recruiting Fair hoping to fill hundreds of open positions across Southwest Virginia | It is no secret that schools all across the country are struggling to find teachers to fill open positions. According to the Western Virginia Public Education Consortium, there are 500 open teaching jobs across Southwest Virginia. Newport News School Board to vote on 'separation agreement' with superintendent | The meeting comes in the wake of a shooting at Richneck Elementary School on Jan. 6, where police said a 6-year-old shot his first-grade teacher. The Floyd County Public School Board voted unanimously to change the monthly meeting time from 7 to 6 p.m. for the 2023 calendar year. 'Programs will be cut': Chesterfield superintendent warns of $17 million shortfall | Chesterfield Superintendent gave a warning to county leaders Tuesday: if the budget doesn't shape up, Chesterfield schools will see real cuts in the classroom. Expanded Class Action Alleges Fairfax County Violated Disabled Students' Civil Rights | Civil rights lawyers have expanded the scope of their class action lawsuit against the Fairfax County School Board and the Virginia Department of Education after more families came forward alleging the state had denied students their federally-mandated special education services. | | | |

RCC and Virginia Tech partnering on aquaculture training for high school students | Rappahannock Community College (RCC) has joined with Virginia Tech to offer a new career and technical training program, Promoting Careers in Aquaculture, for local high school juniors and seniors. Rural Virginia county's school board removes 22 books from library | MADISON - The Madison County School Board recently removed 22 books from the high school library in enacting a policy last fall against sexually explicit content. The banned titles included Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye," "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood and Stephen King's tale of Pennywise the clown, "It." | | |
Arlington school system gets more aggressive in reporting unexpected student absences | Arlington Public Schools has started the school year getting more aggressive in keeping parents informed when their students might not be in class. The school system on Jan. 17 rolled out an updated system for alerting parents to unverified absences, getting that information out earlier, more frequently and in more ways than previously. | | |
Edmunds won't seek third term on School Board | Freddie Edmunds, a two-term member of the Halifax County School Board representing Election District 5, announced this week that he will not seek re-election in November. Edmunds called his time on the School Board "a great experience, full of rewards and challenges" but said he will be stepping away with full confidence that Halifax County Public Schools will move forward in his absence. | | | |

2023 VSBA Capital Conference, January 30-31, 2023
This year’s two-day Capital Conference will kick off with a budget and economic outlook for 2023 with the latest update on the Commonwealth’s financial picture. After the budget presentation there will be a conversation between Former Virginia House of Delegate Chris Saxman and Dr. Bob Holsworth with their perspectives on the landscape of Virginia politics in 2023 and beyond. Following this session, attendees will hear from VSBA’s own, J.T. Kessler and Stacy Haney on the happenings at the Capitol for the 2023 Virginia General Assembly.
