2022 VSBA Conference on Education, July 19, 2022 at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa at Short Pump

Join school division leaders from across Virginia at the 37th annual VSBA Conference on Education. Attendees will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of mini-workshops which highlight successful practices in Virginia’s school divisions. Participants will leave with many great insights and practical ideas. After the roundtable presentations, attendees will break into regional meetings to discuss pertinent issues coming up for their particular regions.

Virginia Board of Education pans Youngkin report on K-12 student achievement - Virginia Mercury

The board's remaining members were appointed by either Northam or his predecessor, Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe. All have had a hand in some of the body's most significant decisions over the last several years, from changes to Virginia's school accreditation process to an initiative to rethink math curricula to a racial justice statement unanimously adopted by the board just a few weeks after the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police.

Spotsylvania schools interim superintendent announces resignation

Spotsylvania County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Carol Flenard announced Thursday morning that she is leaving the school division effective June 30. Flenard made the announcement in an email to the school community. "It is with mixed emotions, I share that I will be leaving Spotsylvania County Public Schools on June 30, 2022.

King George schools superintendent to retire

Robert Benson, superintendent of King George County Public Schools, will retire at the end of June. Benson announced his retirement to staff in a letter sent May 31 and the School Board approved the appointment of current deputy superintendent Jesse Boyd to serve as interim division leader effective July 1.

Richmond School Board adopts FY23 budget, increases bus driver pay

The Richmond School Board voted Tuesday to increase bus driver pay to $23 an hour and approved recommendations to cover funding shortfalls in order to balance the upcoming budget. The fiscal 2023 adopted budget of $557.7 million is broken down by a $354.2 million general fund, a $201.1 special revenue budget and a $2.4 million capital improvement budget.

'Free the shoulders': A student's campaign to change the dress code in Arlington schools

Mary Frances Dempsey say she was just 12-years-old, a sixth grader at Arlington's Williamsburg Middle School, when she set out on a mission to change the dress code for students.
