TCCTC announces 2023 SkillsUSA District Competition winners

60 Tazewell and Bland County students of the Tazewell County Career and Technical Center (TCCTC) competed in the SkillsUSA district-level trade competitions in February. Of the 60, TCCTC had 31 students win and advance to the state SkillsUSA competition beating students from Wythe, Smyth, Carroll, Greyson, and Washington Counties as well as students attending Virginia High School located in Bristol, Virginia.

Alexandria City Schools considering weapon-detector scanners

Amid a recent gun possession incident at Alexandria City High School, school officials are considering installing scanners that detect weapons. Community members in Alexandria have only one day left to complete a survey on the possible use of scanner technology in schools that would detect weapons.

Fredericksburg School Board approves budget

The Fredericksburg School Board at its meeting on Monday unanimously approved a $56.9 million school division operating budget for fiscal year 2024, which begins July 1. The budget is $3.1 million more than the current fiscal year's budget and proposes a $734,500 increase in funding from the city of Fredericksburg.

Hot-air balloon makes emergency landing at Hopewell school Sunday; no one injured

A hot-air balloon was forced to make an emergency landing Sunday afternoon at a city middle school, but no one was reported injured and the scene was quickly and efficiently cleared. The landing happened late Sunday afternoon at Carter G. Woodson Middle School on Winston Churchill Drive.

The After School Satan Club family movie night at Jefferson Forest High School's auditorium took place without incident Saturday night, February 25. The organization had rented the high school auditorium and showed the 1992 animated feature "FernGully: The Last Rainforest."

Culpeper County School Board OKs cell phone tower at CCHS

The Culpeper County Public School Board has approved a contract that would install a cell phone tower on the grounds of Culpeper County High School. The board authorized the move at its regular board meeting Feb. 13 for Superintendent Dr. Anthony Brads to sign a contract between the school system and Milestone Towers.
