Chesapeake School Board member receives award for more than 25 years of service

Chesapeake School Board Vice Chair Thomas Mercer remembers when the board packet he received was printed. Every Thursday before a meeting, every member and executive staff would receive a stack of papers about a foot high. "Talk about killing some trees," he said. That was 1996, when Mercer was first elected.

Board considers some options for new school

The city School Board held its first discussion about naming the city's new intermediate elementary school and spent some time considering external color trim choices. Superintendent Perrigan said the division has formed a series of committees dealing with every aspect of shifting operations from its four current elementary schools into consolidating all second- through fifth-grade students into the new building when it opens in 2024.

Amherst County School Board member resigns

Amherst County School Board member John Grieser resigned on Monday, effective immediately, the division announced. Grieser, a county native and former Amherst County sheriff's captain who attended and graduated from Amherst County Public Schools, began serving the District 1 seat in January 2020. "Mr. Grieser stated that the decision to resign was difficult," the division's statement said.

Capron Elementary School Principal Natasha Rose has been selected for inclusion in the forthcoming Nationwide Registries Women of Distinction 2023 Honors Edition for demonstrating dedication, leadership and professional excellence. A CES news release stated that the honor comes after her nomination from Mrs. Evans-House, who offered the following words of praise for Rose.

Staunton School Board approves budget. Now it goes to city council.

Without the drama that accompanied the process a year ago, the Staunton School Board approved a $46.58 million budget Monday night at its monthly meeting in the Rita S. Wilson council chambers. That's an increase of $3.1 million from a year ago, although it's important to remember that final numbers could change.

School pulls test question equating politics to race, gender

Virginia's largest school system is removing a test question given to a college-level social studies class that equated liberals and conservatives with specific racial and gender demographics. The question appeared on a test given to students of an AP Government class at Fairfax County Public Schools' Online Campus.
