FREDERICKSBURG, VA (09/11/26)—Central Rappahannock Regional Library is pleased to announce a $12,226 grant awarded from Virginia Humanities in support of Rappahannock Reads, a community-wide reading program that brings people together around the same book. By pairing the featured book with related classes and information, this program gives participants a unique opportunity to connect, learn new things, and use that knowledge to enrich the community.
Running from September 2026 through May 2027, this year’s community read centers on Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard, by bestselling author and ecologist Dr. Douglas W. Tallamy, and is available in editions for young readers as well as adults. The program encourages hands-on nature learning through book club kits, information about supporting birds and other wildlife, a digital reading challenge, and workshops with community partners--all leading up to a live community Q&A with Dr. Tallamy on Saturday, April 10.
"I am thrilled that the library is able to bring back the Rappahannock Reads program for the first time since 2019, thanks to this grant from Virginia Humanities,” said Library Executive Director Rebecca Purdy. “Rappahannock Reads is a celebration of community--it provides a shared topic to gather around and explore, from local organizations sharing resources to community members exchanging ideas.”
