CDC Recommends Additional Boosters for Certain Individuals
What You Need to Know
-
As with vaccines for other diseases, people are best protected against infection with the virus that causes COVID-19 when they stay up to date with vaccinations.
- COVID-19 vaccines continue to protect people from getting seriously ill, being hospitalized, and even dying—especially people who have received a booster.
- CDC recommends everyone ages 12 years and older receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster after completing their primary COVID-19 vaccination series. Some people can receive two boosters.
-
People who are moderately or severely immunocompromised have specific COVID-19 vaccine recommendations, including recommendations for a booster. Learn more about COVID-19 vaccine recommendations for people who are moderately or severely immunocompromised.
Adults age 50 and older and some immunocompromised individuals are now eligible to get a second Pfizer or Moderna booster dose at least 4 months after their first booster (whether they received a Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson booster). Older adults—especially those with underlying medical conditions—and people with compromised immune systems are at higher risk of severe COVID-19, and are among those most likely to benefit from the additional protection of a second booster shot.

Pharmacy Precision Clinics
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Division of Pharmacy Services developed a COVID-19 vaccination program called Pharmacy Precision Clinics (PPCs) to vaccinate as many Virginians as possible. Precision Clinics operate by partnering with local participating pharmacies to administer COVID-19 vaccines.
Pharmacy Precision Clinics are available to faith and community-based organizations interested in making COVID-19 vaccinations. PPCs are free of charge to the community.
To request a PPC, interested organizations should complete and submit this REDCap survey. There are no minimum or maximum number of vaccination requirements to request a clinic.
Once the survey is submitted; the appropriate Local Health Department (LHD) will be notified and will initiate the process of coordinating the requested clinic. If an LHD is unable to facilitate the coordination, the VDH Division of Pharmacy Services team will ensure that a clinic is coordinated as per the request.

National Minority Health Month 2022
April is National Minority Health Month (NMHM)! This year the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) and its partners are highlighting the important role individuals and organizations can play in helping to reduce health disparities and improve the health of racial and ethnic minority and American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
This year's NMHM theme is Give Your Community a Boost! This theme focuses on the continued importance of COVID-19 vaccination, including boosters, as one of the strongest tools we can use to end the COVID-19 pandemic. The theme also supports the many other efforts happening in communities throughout the country to advance health equity.
Visit the NMHM website in English and Spanish to find social media messages, graphics, and information you can use to Give Your Community a Boost!

Has any one close to you had a stroke?
Would you be able to spot a stroke?
Strokes are one of the leading causes of death for men and women in the United States. But there is some good news—they are treatable and up to 80 percent of them are preventable.
May is National Stroke Awareness Month, so it’s an appropriate time to study up on your stroke knowledge and decrease your risk.
Stay Stroke Smart by becoming a Stroke Smart Community!

Black Maternal Health Week
April 11-17, 2022
The Black Mamas Matter Alliance is sponsoring the third annual Black Maternal Health Week as part of the observation of National Minority Health Month in April. Rates of maternal morbidity and mortality (MMM) are much higher in the United States than in its peer nations. National severe maternal morbidity (SMM) rates have nearly doubled over the past decade, and the incidence of SMM was 166% higher for Black women than White women from 2012 to 2015. To help mitigate SMM, the Black Mamas Matter Alliance will observe Black Maternal Health Week to raise awareness of the problem; enrich the dialogue surrounding Black maternal health; promote solutions, policies, and research; and increase community involvement.
This year marks the fifth year anniversary of the Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) campaign. Founded and led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, BMHW is a week of awareness, activism, and community building intended to:
- Deepen the national conversation about Black maternal health in the US;
- Amplify community-driven policy, research, and care solutions;
- Center the voices of Black Mamas, women, families, and stakeholders;
- Provide a national platform for Black-led entities and efforts on maternal health, birth and reproductive justice; and
- Enhance community organizing on Black maternal health.

Sadness, fear, worry, or other emotions can affect us during or after tough situations, like dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, the loss of a family member or friend, or experiences related to racism. Spring weather can be unpredictable. When severe weather hits unexpectedly, the risk of injury and weather-related death increases, so planning makes sense. Prepare for storms, floods, and tornadoes as if you know in advance they are coming, because in the spring, they very likely will.
Advance planning for thunderstorms, lightning, tornadoes, and floods requires specific safety precautions. You can follow many of the same steps for all extreme weather events. Keep an emergency kit on hand.
