CMS Unveils Major Organizational Change to Reduce Provider and Clinician Burden and Improve Patient Outcomes

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is announcing the creation of the Office of Burden Reduction and Health Informatics to unify the agency’s efforts to reduce regulatory and administrative burden and to further the goal of putting patients first. The new office is an outgrowth of the agency’s Patients over Paperwork (PoP) Initiative, which is the cornerstone of CMS’s ongoing efforts to implement President Trump’s 2017 executive order to “Cut the Red Tape” and eliminate duplicative, unnecessary, and excessively costly requirements and regulations. This announcement permanently embeds a culture of burden reduction across all platforms of CMS agency operations. Read more .
State Officials Announce Latest COVID-19 Facts
California Department of Public Health; June 24, 2020

The California Department of Public Health today announced the most recent statistics on COVID-19. California's positivity rate – a key indicator of community spread – is trending modestly upward in the 14-day average. Hospitalization rates over the long-term are showing a slight uptick in the 14-day average. California has 190,222 confirmed cases to date. Numbers may not represent true day-over-day change as reporting of test results can be delayed. There have been 3,592,899 tests conducted in California. As testing capacity continues to increase across the state, an increase in the number of positive cases has been expected – increasing the importance of positivity rates to find signs of community spread. There have been 5,632 COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic. Read more
HHS Finalizes Rule on Section 1557 Protecting Civil Rights in Healthcare, Restoring the Rule of Law, and Relieving Americans of Billions in Excessive Costs
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Jun 12, 2020

Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) finalized a rule under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that maintains vigorous enforcement of federal civil rights laws on the basis of race, color, national origin, disability, age, and sex, and restores the rule of law by revising certain provisions that go beyond the plain meaning of the law as enacted by Congress. The final rule will also relieve the American people of approximately $2.9 billion in undue and ineffective regulatory burdens over five years.
