Eastern Michigan University has a comprehensive MA/MFA program in Applied Drama and Theatre for the Young that includes a school touring play twice a year, opportunities for research scholarship, and the perfect mix of theory with practical applications.

Students receive a rigorous class structure while also being given flexibility to specialize in different avenues within the field. Learn facilitation strategies and techniques that can be directly applied to your current work. Create new research for presentation at ADTY conferences. Further your teaching craft during hands-on laboratory classes.

Nestled within the larger EMU Theatre program, students are able to work on Main Stage TYA productions and with acting/directing faculty to further develop their studies. The ADTY Tour reaches 2,000 students each year with a variety of devised and scripted productions. The Engage department at EMU provides plenty of applied drama opportunities for students within the local community, partnering with organizations that support children, arts integration, student justice, and a wealth of other causes. We also have our own Playback Theatre Company that creates improvisational theatre around the audience's or group member’s life experiences. Our CloseUP theatre troupe, a collaboration between faculty and students, works to improve classroom and university culture through originally created theatre.

Our program also offers Graduate Assistantships in multiple departments that include tuition waivers and a biweekly stipend.

There’s a lot to do at EMU!
