FAFP's January Member Spotlight - Dr. Ashley Walker

"Happy new year! I hope 2026 is off to a great start. The end of one year and the beginning of another is an opportunity to reflect on our past and look to our future. For me, the idea of a career in medicine began before I realized what it was – and it started when I was a young kid in a hunting blind. I was introduced to anatomy while helping my dad field dress deer, and I found it fascinating. My mom furthered my interest by getting me a 1990s computer game where I could learn the bones and muscles of the human body." CLICK HERE to read more.

Tallahassee Week 3

The third week of the Florida legislative session was all business with committees hearing bills that are moving through the process. This week’s Capitol Update will show bills not moving at the end of the report. The FAFP will continue highlighting bills of interest to FM, so stay tuned during the nine-week session for the latest updates.

Recognizing Excellence in Family Medicine: Become a Fellow

The FAFP would like to recognize excellence in family medicine by encouraging eligible members to apply for the Degree of Fellow through the AAFP.

The Degree of Fellow recognizes AAFP members who have distinguished themselves among their colleagues, as well as in their communities, by their service for family medicine, by their advancement of healthcare to the American people, and by their professional development through medical education and research. Fellows of the AAFP are recognized as champions of family medicine. They are the physicians who make family medicine the premier specialty in servicing their community and profession. From a personal perspective, being a Fellow signifies not only tenure but also additional work in your community, involvement in organized medicine and teaching, and a greater commitment to continuing professional development and/or research.

Application Requirements

Any Active, Life or Inactive member, with dues and re-elections in good standing, may, upon application to the American Academy of Family Physicians, be elected to receive the Degree of Fellow upon fulfilling the following requirements:

  1. Member must have held Active membership for six years, or held a combination of Resident and Active membership for a total of six years.
  2. Accrue a grand total of 100 points as defined by this application. Cite experiences and activities in the following areas: Life-Long Learning, Practice Quality and Improvement, Volunteer Teaching, Public Service, Publishing and Research, and Service to the Specialty.
  3. Submit a one-time fee of $210. (Note: Credit card will be charged at the time the application is submitted. If the application is rejected, a full refund will be issued.)

Candidates wanting to be considered in the current year should submit their application by September 23, 2026. Become a Fellow and celebrate your career milestones at the AAFP Fellowship Convocation or the FAFP Annual Meeting.

Telehealth Flexibilities Extended

Federal telehealth flexibilities have been extended for 2 years (through 2027) via the recent funding package passed by Congress. The FAFP will provide more information once it is available, but this is very positive news considering how telehealth has become such an important part of medical practice today.
