Dear Members,

We hope your 2022 is off to a great start!

Please anticipate a more detailed e-newsletter from us shortly, to include information about our February and March Michael F. Crowley Lectures, our plans for Newport Irish Heritage Month, and a greeting from our new board president, Deanna Conheeny.

In the meantime, we are pleased to share an opportunity to attend a free "virtual" lecture on a topic that will be of interest to many of you.

Our friends at the Redwood Library are presenting a talk on the famed Irish philosopher, George Berkeley, a resident of Newport in the Colonial era.

Please read on for details and a link to reserve.

VIRTUAL LECTURE JAN 26 @ 6PM

Presented by the Redwood Library

Dooley Noted

George Berkeley is one of the forefathers of the Redwood Library and Athenaeum. The Anglo-Irish scholar and priest lived near Newport 1729-1731 while awaiting funds for an Anglican seminary in the New World. At the time, he was already a renowned philosopher, who was well connected to many of the leading British thinkers and writers of the day, including Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope. He was arguably the preeminent intellectual in the colonies and made significant contributions to the cultural life of Newport, including as co-founder of the Philosophical Society, precursor to the Redwood Library.

Guest speaker, Professor Jere Wells, will discuss Berkeley’s legacy here in Newport as well as his larger contributions to intellectual and church history.
