I Stand Corrected.
A long time client called me to say thanks for locating a therapist for him in his new city. He had reported great results, for all concerned. He mentioned that they had been doing sessions over Zoom. This was even more impressive. I said you must have built a great baseline connection prior to the lock down to be able to do such good work over Zoom. He said, “No, we have always been working over the internet. We’ve never met in-person.” This really started messing with my reality.
Then I looked at my experience of late. I have had two sessions coaching clients over the phone, that was every bit as good as what I have ever done in workshops. You know how we always think in person is ideal for optimum communication, right? I think that is still true, but maybe that is the challenge we are all facing. Shifting our reality to what is needed in this strange new time. Not just for right now but for the long-term future.
It’s not just because the restrictions of the pandemic are not going away soon. We are not going back to the way things were,
ever
. I live in the Los Angeles megalopolis. Some people who are now forced to work from home are finding they are way more productive at home than they were in the office. Take 2 hours of commuting off my plate everyday people are happier and less stressed too. I am not saying every person has this experience but a high percentage do. They aren’t just adapting they are
advancing
.
I recently wrote about the damaging unintended consequences of the open office: High stress, more sick days, lowered collaboration and effectiveness. This all goes away too, when connecting from home.

I know working from home has its own challenges and hurdles but for some it will be the
desired
new normal. THEY WON’T WANT TO GO BACK TO THE OFFICE, AND THE BUSINESSES THAT QUICKLY ADAPT TO THIS NEW REALITY WILL GET ITS PICK OF THE TALENT POOL THAT PREFERS THE WORK FROM HOME OPTION.
For me it is the colliding of three breakdowns. I have already flown my Million Miles on United Airlines, enough of that; in-person workshops do take a serious toll on my body at 71; and I still want to make a difference but can’t meet face to face given current restrictions. One client who reserved coaching time a few days ago, said, “I was waiting for a time when we could be in the same room together. Now since that is off the table, what am I waiting for?” He and I met this past Friday on Go To Meeting, it was great.
