Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

Reflections with Fr. Mark
Yesterday, we recalled a day in the history of the United States of America that carried our nation into the efforts of WWII and defending the freedom of people in many other nations. Today, we recall a moment in the journey of faith where “freedom” also comes into play. The freedom we speak of today is the human choice between cooperating with good or evil.

As always, we learn that there is consequence to our exercising our freedom through our choices. Today, we celebrate God’s freedom in blessing Mary with a special grace; and, later, her invitation to respond to this particular blessing.

Today, in celebrating the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we honor Mary for her response, her “yes,” to God in the divine plan. We honor the choice of Mary in exercising her freedom, shedding any temptation of self-absorption.  Rather, Mary became a preeminent example of self-sacrifice in a loving response to God’s will.  May we exercise our freedom to choose always to flow from our recognition that we are blessed, too; and, our response should always be in the context of listening to the will of God.

Happy Advent!

The journey continues…choosing blessing over selfishness.
