Science in the Virtual and Actual Pub
Thursday, September 12, 2022, 7:00 PM

Science in the Virtual & Actual Pub is a twice-monthly program where you can grab a drink and engage in some friendly science! Beginning September 8, 2022, the new schedule begins with events on the second and fourth Thursdays at 7:00 PM. Second Thursdays will be fully virtual. Pandemic permitting, the fourth Thursday will be a hybrid event, live streamed from different locations.

On September 12th, the pub welcomes Dr. Briana Pobiner, Paleoanthropologist, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, who will discuss the "real" paleo diet. The modern "paleo" diet movement makes assumptions about what our ancient humans ate, but are these assumptions based on actual evidence? Presenting a variety of lines of evidence for prehistoric human diets including early human, animal, and plant fossils, ancient stone tools, DNA, and living human and chimpanzee diets, Pobiner will discuss significant changes in the evolution of human diets – and highlight what makes human meat-eating unique.

Writing Your Loss Story
Tuesdays, September 6, 13, 20, and 27, 6:00-8:00 PM

Writing Your Loss Story is a four-week writing program that provides therapeutic writing prompts for the bereaved to use to tell their story.

The group, facilitated by Jane Baker Segelken, LMSW, allows individuals living with loss to explore their unique circumstances. A goal of the program is healing with words — participants will create their own unique works by responding to writing prompts and will be encouraged to share their work and engage in discussion.

The expressive writing process allows participants to write deep thoughts and feelings about their grief journey without regard to form or other writing conventions like spelling, punctuation, and verb agreement. As opposed to talking, writing has the added benefit of including time for reflection and introspection that talking doesn’t allow. This group will give those dealing with loss an outlet to express their feelings in a nonjudgmental, confidential environment.

Participants must commit to all 4 sessions. Registration is required by September 1st. For more information contact the Bereavement staff via phone at 607-272-0212 or email.
Virtual Book Discussion: The Wild Edge of Sorrow by Francis Weller
September 15, 2022, 6:00 - 7:30 PM

Brenna Fitzgerald, Hospicare’s Communications Coordinator, will facilitate an interactive discussion of the book The Wild Edge of Sorrow by Francis Weller, a psychotherapist, writer, and soul activist. In this lyrical book filled with touching stories, Weller offers a poetic handbook for the art of grieving. His insights into grief and the grieving process, including the power of grief rituals and community grieving, reveal a vitality that is possible to encounter when we welcome, rather than fear, the pain of loss.

This event is co-hosted by the Tompkins County Public Library and copies of the book will be available to check out. You can also purchase your book at Buffalo Street Books and receive a 10% discount. Just call or stop by and tell them you are a member of the Hospicare Book Club.

Registration is required by September 12. For more information contact the Bereavement staff via phone at 607-272-0212. Login details will be provided after registration.

Helping Others
Hospicare Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are an essential part of the hospice team. Hospicare & Palliative Care Services is offering a training series for individuals interested in volunteering their time assisting patients with advanced illnesses and supporting their families. This training will be a hybrid of self-paced online training modules as well as meeting in person with other attendees to discuss and learn more about hospice.

The next training session is scheduled for 4 evenings, and trainees need to plan on attending all sessions. The dates are 9/7, 9/12, 9/14, and 9/19 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 PM.

Volunteers help provide patients and families with respite, companionship, light housekeeping, assistance with errands, and reading aloud, as well as provide support for the staff in the 6-bed Residence on King Road in Ithaca.

If you are interested in volunteering, please visit Hospicare's web page to fill out an application. Once your application is received the Manager of Volunteer Services, Wendy Yettru, will contact you to set up an interview. If you have any further questions, please contact Wendy at 607-272-0212.
