September is AOT Research and Innovation Symposium Month!

This year's virtual AOT Research and Innovation Symposium will be available starting in early September. Visit the 2021 Symposium website to review posters, fact sheets, and presentation recordings for all 26 projects featured this year.

The kickoff of the Symposium, Wednesday, September 8, coincides with the annual State Transportation Innovation Council (STIC) Stakeholder Meeting and will include keynote addresses from Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Associate Administration for Infrastructure Hari Kalla and FHWA Senior Pavement Asphalt Engineer Leslie McCarthy. Like last year, there will be four simultaneous breakout sessions featuring presentations of each Symposium project and Q&A session with the presenters. On Thursday, September 9, we will hold non-overlapping sessions of the recordings and Q&A.

Symposium details and calendar invitations are available here.
No registration is required; project lists and calendar invitations can be found on the main Symposium page.
High Value Research Project Winner: HIVE II
VTrans' Region 6's District Project Manager, Michelle Redmond, championed the 2019 External Research Project, Hydraulic Inspection Vehicle Explorer (HIVE) Culvert Upgrade. The HIVE Culvert Upgrade project was one of 16 national High Value Research (HVR) projects selected in 2021, and there has already been interest from several other state DOTs and a federal DOE project. Watch Michelle talk about using the HIVE and the upgrade project in this video and visit the project page to learn more here.

A complete list of 2021 HVR winners can be found here.
FEATURED PROJECTS FOR THE QUARTER
Each quarter we highlight research projects and innovations happening throughout Vermont and New England. All of the Symposium pages should be updated with more materials (posters, presentation recordings, etc.) as we receive them by the beginning of September. Please keep checking for updates.
Quantifying Nutrient Pollution Reductions Achieved by Erosion Remediation Projects on Vermont's Roads
Experimental installations of gully stabilization projects provide insights into the efficacy of investments in erosion remediation throughout Vermont.

Reclaimed Stabilized Base: Stabilizing Agent Selection & Design
Developing guidelines to determine applicability and/or benefits of different stabilizers used in asphalt road reconstruction.

Evaluation of Processed Glass Aggregate for Utilization in Transportation Projects as a Sand Borrow
Can processed glass aggregate (PGA) replace sand borrow in Vermont, New England, and beyond?

Testing UVC Lighting Technology to Improve Rural Transit Systems
Can UV-C light intervention stop the spread of viruses on Vermont's public transit vehicles?

Monitoring of Landslides in Vermont Using Drone and Geologic Surveys
Geomorphically compatible structures, designed using regional hydraulic geometry curves that have been updated using high-resolution LiDAR and stream geomorphic assessment data, will have greater resilience to extreme flood events.

LanePainter: Lane Marks Enhancement via Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)
LanePainter, a GAN-based model for simultaneously classifying and enhancing low-quality lane marks, has been demonstrated to successfully detect low-quality lane markings, improving the performance of lane detection algorithms.
