Save Lives: Keep Your Eyes on the Road

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and Vision Zero Houston joins safety agencies across the nation to amplify the same message: distracted driving kills. According to the National Safety Council, at least 8 people are killed every day because of distracted driving.

Distracted driving is one of the top contributing factors on crash fatalities and serious injuries in Houston. Follow these tips to save lives and keep Houston streets safer for all travelers:

  • Put down your cell phone while driving. Consider enacting the Do Not Disturb function on your phone that senses when you are driving and sends a message to people calling and texting that you cannot be reached while driving.
  • Remember: Sending a text message, talking on a cell phone, using a navigation system, and eating/drinking while driving are a few examples of distracted driving. Any of these distractions can endanger you, your passengers, and others on the road.
  • Drive carefully and watch out for pedestrians, bikers, and people boarding and exiting buses and trains.

Everyone deserves safe, accessible streets and sidewalks. That’s why Houston is committed to ending traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030. We can prevent people from dying on our roadways.

No loss of life is acceptable. Vision Zero Houston prioritizes safety and accessibility in street design for people of all ages and abilities.
