Chairman's Message
by Sharon Lukich, CPA

November…the doorway to the most festive - and busiest! - time of the year. As your calendars begin to fill, we hope you’ll make time for some of the excellent events coming up at TXCPA Dallas.
Our CPE calendar is filling, too, and you’re going to want to take advantage of some of the great educational opportunities on offer starting this month. Thanks to our hardworking CPE Council, we have something for everyone, including topics ranging from international taxation to subscription pricing for accountants to nonfinancial contributions. Join us for our new “Lunch & Learn” series, a program of one-hour, online presentations designed to enjoy over your lunch hour. This month’s event is on November 12, and focuses on privilege-protecting tax information. And if you’re in need of fulfilling your state Ethics requirement, you can do that on November 9, at our live Ethics course.
To help kick off the winter holiday season, we invite you to join us for our November Thirsty Thursday on November 18. BKD sponsors this month’s event that starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Blue Mesa Grill in Addison. On Saturday, November 20, and Sunday, November 21, an old favorite returns: the Margarita Society Toy Sort. Bring your happy holiday spirit and help organize the mountains of toys collected at the Margarita Ball for numerous charities that will distribute them to thousands of underprivileged children in the North Texas area. You'll find more details elsewhere in the newsletter. And if that’s not enough to get you in the holiday mood, meet us at 6:00 p.m. on December 15, at the beautifully-decked Park City Club for our annual Chapter Holiday Party! After the gloom and isolation of the last two years, we can hardly wait to greet our friends, old and new, and enjoy a night of holiday cheer, live and in person!
The month of November is traditionally a time of gratitude and, in that spirit, let me express my appreciation to you for the gift of your input and your support of our association. You are the heart and soul of this organization, and I thank you.
Sharon Lukich, Chair
2021-22 Board of Directors

Live Ethics Course
Accounting Ethics
Note: TXCPA Dallas Ethics classes are now presented on a bi-monthly schedule. When planning for the fulfillment of your Ethics course requirement, please keep this new schedule in mind.
You are invited to join us for our bi-monthly, State-approved, four-hour Ethics course, Accounting Ethics.
Speaker and author, Allison M. McLeod, LL.M., CPA, will educate and inform CPAs not just on what is the right thing to do according to the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct but how to put your values into action! As part of this course, we will also look at various schools of ethical thought and walk through real world examples of individuals and companies faced with moral dilemmas.
Description: A CPA is challenged in today’s work world to not only serve his/her client or employer but also to protect the public interest by ensuring that there is transparency in financial reporting or there is fair administration of the tax laws. In balancing the two interests, a CPA may find him or herself in an ethical dilemma. This course covers not only basic ethical frameworks, but also specific rules governing CPA practice and responsibilities. It concludes with a section on how a CPA can put his or her ethics into action.
Learning Objectives:
- To educate licensees in ethics of professional accounting as Texas CPAs.
- To convey the intent of the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct and the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct in the performance of professional accounting services/work, not to adhere to the mere technical compliance of such rules.
- To assist the Texas CPA in applying ethical judgment in interpreting the rules and determining public interest. Public interest should be placed ahead of self-interest, even if it means a loss of job or client.
- To review and discuss the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct and their implications for persons in a variety of practices, including:
- CPAs in client practice of public accountancy who perform attest and non-attest services.
- CPAs employed in industry who provide internal accounting and auditing services.
- CPAs employed in education or in government accounting or auditing.
This is a live, in-person event.

TXCPA Dallas Training Facility
12400 Coit Road, Suite 750
Dallas, TX 75251

If you think you have what it takes to make this shift or are just curious about it, you are hereby invited to open a dialogue about how best to alter this language by Ed Kless, Sage’s senior director of partner development and strategy, who will facilitate this session.
Learning Objectives: Attendees will:
- Understand the two business models in use by firms;

12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
This is an online event.
Course Description: What keeps business owners and high-performance employees from achieving phenomenal, consistent results... are their proverbial sand traps. Tiger Woods knew that 11% of a golf game is played from a sand-trap or in the rough. And because he acknowledged it and spent time learning expert techniques, he often pitched out and onto the green very close to the hole. Sand-Traps are the hazards that take you off your best business game: Paralyzing Fear / Covid19 Isolation / Ghosting Clients / Conflict Resolution. Scott Carley's award-winning illustrated presentation is about what blocks business owners and high-performance employees from achieving phenomenal, consistent results. Complete with his pitching wedge and golf balls. FOCUS and taking action on your obstacles, innovation and KPI's separates Champion performers!
Learning Objectives: Attendees will leave with:
- Confidence to tackle their hazards;
- Steps to overcome objections and push-back; and
- A winning attitude and their personal winning icon.

TXCPA Dallas Scholarship Winner Spotlight
Each month, we will spotlight one of this year's Dallas CPA Society Scholarship winners. Join us this month in getting to know Southern Methodist University (SMU) graduate accounting student Jarrett Fairbanks and welcoming him to TXCPA Dallas.
Without actually knowing it, Jarrett has wanted to become a CPA his whole life. Ever the calculating tactitian, even as a kid, he was always the one in his peer group to think two steps ahead and plan his strategy accordingly. So when he discovered the field of accounting, he knew he’d found the line of work tailor-made for him. Only one problem: his strong dislike of the “nerdy math geeks” stigma surrounding accountants. One of Jarrett’s goals is to remove that bias. As he puts it, “There is nothing more that I want than to be an SMU alum who got his CPA and is out in the Dallas workforce…spreading the news about TXCPA Dallas and decreasing the stigma around accounting.”
As an undergraduate at SMU, Jarrett was awarded the SMU Opportunity and Max Thurber Scholarships. He was President of the SMU Baseball Club and Treasurer of SMU Buddies. Jarrett has interned for Armanino, Hilltop Holdings and KPMG, where he will join the firm full-time upon receipt of his Masters in Accountancy in May of 2022.
TXCPA Dallas welcomes and congratulates Jarrett Fairbanks.

The good news is that you have TXCPA on your team. Let Tram Le, CPA – Fort Worth, explain why the PAC is your home-field advantage.
December is TXCPA Month of Service
