Chairman's Message
by Kenny Broom, CPA

I am very excited about the October activities at TXCPA Dallas. The month offers events that will educate and entertain, and we hope you’ll take advantage of all of them.

We have a couple of great education opportunities this month. First, an old favorite returns. After a two-year hiatus, the Member Appreciation CPE Series is back! On October 18, join us at the Communities Foundation of Texas for four hours of continuing education including sessions on cybersecurity, IRS criminal investigations and a presentation on coaching. Have questions about Medicare? Then sign up for the October 26 online Lunch & Learn course Navigating Medicare 101 and let Michelle Feibus answer them for you.

Our October Thirsty Thursday networking event is on Thursday, October 20 at Blue Mesa Grill in Addison. If you’re new to the group, this is the perfect occasion to meet and get to know your fellow TXCPA Dallas members. If you’re a seasoned participant, it’s a great excuse to kick back for a couple of hours, enjoy some refreshments and catch up with your friends and colleagues. This is one of our most popular events, and we encourage you to come out and visit with us!

For our younger members, we hope you’ll join us on Saturday, October 22, 10:00 a.m. in Klyde Warren Park for Yoga in the Park. The Dallas Yoga Center will lead this 45-minute, outdoor yoga session. All levels of experience are welcome.

Later this month, the Nominations Committee meets to create the slate of candidates for 2023-24 TXCPA Dallas leadership that will be voted on at the Annual Meeting of Members in January. We invite you to be an active contributor in this annual process by submitting recommendations for open positions. There’s an article elsewhere in this newsletter that gives you more information. I urge you to be a part of this vital aspect of our organization and send your nominations to Laura McFadden by Monday, October 17. Help create the future of your professional association.

There are so many great things happening at TXCPA Dallas, not only in October, but through the end of the year. Read your monthly newsletters and check our website often to keep up with all the many terrific ways to get the most out of your membership.

Until November…

Kenny Broom, CPA

Scholarship Winner Spotlight

For the next several months, we will spotlight one of this year's TXCPA Dallas Scholarship winners in each newsletter edition. Join us this month in getting to know Southern Methodist University (SMU) graduate accounting student Travis Almand and welcoming him to TXCPA Dallas.

In his freshman year at SMU, Travis had no idea what he wanted to major in, but with the help of a great professor to open his eyes to the seemingly endless opportunities offered by the accounting field, he realized that this was the place for him. He believes that, as a CPA, he can achieve leadership roles in public accounting or industry or even pursue his dream of being a special agent forensic accountant for the government.

As an undergraduate at SMU, Travis was awarded the BBA Scholars Scholarship from SMU and the American Airlines Education Foundation Scholarship. He has also received the MSA Scholarship from the SMU MSA Program. He is a member of the Alpha Chi National College Honor and Beta Gamma Sigma Business Societies. He is an SMU Cox BBA Scholar and has been on the SMU Honor Roll with distinction. He has served as Vice President of Communications for Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity, a member of Mustang Heroes, a volunteer at Highland Park United Methodist Church and a member of Wesley House. He received his BBA in Accounting in 2021, and plans to graduate with his Master’s degree next year.

Travis has interned at Kathy Fielder Boutique and at PwC where he looks forward to returning as a CPA and full-time staff member in 2023.

TXCPA Dallas welcomes and congratulates Travis Almand.

The PAC has Your Back

The CPA-PAC can help members to do the research and understand those legislative candidates who support the accounting profession. By supporting the right candidates and officeholders, the CPA-PAC is well positioned to advance the Society’s legislative program. In 2023, TXCPA will have a proactive legislative program to support the pipeline and other initiatives. Your support is crucial as we get close to the 2023 legislative session. Support the PAC.

December is TXCPA Month of Service

Again this year, TXCPA’s Branding and Community Outreach Committee has identified financial literacy as a focus area for service and education during TXCPA Month of Service. The CPA profession is well positioned to provide guidance and support for helping Texans build stronger financial foundations. Help us increase our impact in December with your participation. Later this fall, contact your chapter for local engagement opportunities, or visit TXCPA’s website to learn more about how you, your firm or your company can participate in TXCPA Month of Service.
