The National Planning Conference in Atlanta is just six weeks away, but there is still plenty of time to register and plan your trip. If you are able to attend, consider serving as a California Delegate at the Delegate Assembly where the APA Legislative and Policy Committee will be presenting policy guides on two topics for adoption. The topics are planning for hazard mitigation and planning for an aging population. Please send any comments on the proposed policy guides to me by March 25, 2014.
This year's Delegate Assembly will be held in Atlanta on Saturday, April 26 from 3:30-5:30 PM. If you would like to serve as a delegate please email me and APA California Chapter President Brooke Peterson.

After a rainy weekend, many Angelenos may wonder where all the water goes. In arid areas such as Los Angeles that are experiencing drought, stormwater is a valuable resource that could be re-used via green infrastructure.
Elmer Avenue is an intriguing example of a successful green infrastructure project and part of LA's Green Streets Initiative. The Sun Valley watershed has been susceptible to serious flooding over the decades but before the project, the street had no sidewalks, storm drains, street lights or curbs. An innovative LA-based green infrastructure collaborative, made up of residents, NGOs and government agencies, worked together to devise sustainable stormwater solutions for the block.
Please join APA LA for a tour of Elmer Avenue with Wing Tam, Assistant Manager of the City of LA's Watershed Protection Division and one of the lead engineers on the project. Wing will explain the efforts that went into transforming this block into the model green street it is today -- see for yourself the benefits of green infrastructure for the community.

In fall 2013, the City of Los Angeles legalized murals after having banned them for a decade. Join APA LA, Council District 14 Planning Director Tanner Blackman, and Cindy Schwarzstein of Cartwheel Art for a tour highlighting the murals of the Arts District and what the new Mural Ordinance means for LA's urban environment and its role as a major art city. After the tour, we'll stop by Angel City Brewery for drinks and discussion.
The Arts District features murals by RISK, Shepard Fairey, Vyal, Dabs & Myla, Anthony Lister, How and Nosm, JR and Ron English, among other acclaimed artists. Tour guests will be provided a souvenir map designed by Arts District designer Carlos Rodriguez that lists the murals, along with points of interest and businesses in the area.

The water history of Los Angeles is marked by natural scarcity, abundance, and drought. This year's 100th anniversary of the Los Angeles Aqueduct celebrates a reliable and plentiful water source to match an expansionary vision for the city. Yet local water predictability produced resource depletion and legal wrangling in the Owens Valley where the watershed feeds the Aqueduct. Now a project called "Aqueduct Futures" proposes a cooperative 21st century realignment among stakeholders to balance water consumption, watershed ecology, economics, and culture.

LA City Planning Director Talks Parks in DC
Los Angeles' Director of Planning, Michael LoGrande, will travel to Washington, DC to participate in a March 24 roundtable with APA and the National Recreation and Park Association titled "The Role of Parks in Shaping Successful Cities." National leaders in planning and park development will discuss leveraging parks and public open spaces for economic development and revitalization; connecting parks and recreation to planning for improved community health outcomes; and using parks and public lands as green infrastructure to reduce gray infrastructure costs, improve stormwater management, and provide other public and environmental benefits.
