Muscatine Art Center Exhibit: “Great Cover Ups: Quilts of the 19th & 20th Centuries” opening
February 6th, 2021

Quilts tell colorful stories that are deeper than the wadding, deeper than the pile of covers layered on a cold winter night. Not so long ago, quilts were considered among the most elaborate and treasured possessions in the typical American home. The exhibition, “Great Cover Ups: Quilts of the 19th & 20th Centuries,” is on view at the Muscatine Art Center from February 6th through April 4th. “The quilts in this exhibition are all part of the Muscatine Art Center’s permanent collection,” explains Melanie Alexander, Director. “The exhibition features about 30 different quilts and most have a Muscatine history connection.”

Utilizing as much technology and relationships as possible to make these projects feasible, the performances will be streamed the day of each concert via YouTube, the Muscatine Symphony Facebook page, as well as being aired on MPW’s public access Channel 9.

With so many ways to enjoy these new performances of the Symphony, the MSO is hopeful to lift the spirits of not only our usual audience members, but of those throughout the region who may not have joined us in previous seasons.

Puppets & Pastries for Adults
Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre
Virtual Event

Lovers of puppet theatre will still have the opportunity to see cutting edge puppetry directed towards adults, listen to music, and enjoy poetry and storytelling. All donations will help to support the Summer Neighborhood Tour, Eulenspiegel’s annual tour to parks, neighborhood centers, and low income neighborhoods.

Since serving desserts is not possible, each performer will showcase a dessert of their own making, talk about its significance to them, and provide a recipe. People who donate to the puppet theatre will receive an attractive PDF copy of all of the recipes. Eulenspiegel Board members will also provide recipes.

See puppet pieces by Eulenspiegel puppeteers Monica Leo and Justin Cornett as well as frequent guest puppeteer Pam Corcoran from Wisconsin. Eulenspiegel’s Stephanie Vallez will act as MC with the help of two chicken puppets. Longtime Iowa Poet Laureate Mary Swander will don her comedienne hat and regale us with farm jokes! Add the angelic singing voice of Laura Kittrell and nostalgic poems by Duffy DeFrance for a delightful evening.

The event is available free, but those who donate will receive all of the scrumptious recipes!
