As we start the month of February, we reflect on the recent wildfires that devastated parts of Los Angeles, and our hearts go out to the families, individuals, and communities who have been impacted. The loss of homes, businesses, and, tragically, lives, is a reminder of the unpredictable power of nature. We stand with those affected during this challenging time and offer our deepest condolences. 

In this time of tragedy, we want to recognize the incredible efforts of the firefighters, paramedics, police, and emergency workers who risked their lives to protect others. Their courage and dedication are a testament to the strength of our community. We salute you for your selflessness and bravery. 

While we hope for a year without devastating wildfires, it’s essential to be prepared in case one should affect our area. Wildfires can spread quickly and unpredictably, so taking steps now can make all the difference when the time comes. 

Here are a few steps we can take to be ready:

Ensuring that our families, homes, and communities are prepared, we will have confidence in facing these emergencies.

Chris Topping, Fire Inspector/Investigator

This month, we're shining the spotlight on Chris Topping, a Fire Inspector/Investigator with Vista Fire Rescue.

Chris is a native San Diegan who is deeply committed to serving our community. He attended St. Augustine High School and then went on to SDSU, where he studied Public Administration. After college, he developed a passion for public safety, becoming an EMT, and soon after that, completing paramedic school.

Chris began his fire prevention career with the City of Oceanside before joining Vista Fire Rescue as a Fire Inspector/Investigator. In his role, Chris conducts building inspections, oversees defensible space clearance requirements, and manages pre-plans for emergency responses.

In his off-duty time, Chris enjoys playing and watching sports, especially football, baseball, basketball, and volleyball. He has multiple outdoor grills and likes to spend time with family and friends and work on projects around the house. Whether it’s watching movies, going camping, or making a trip to Costco or Home Depot, he likes to find balance with family and friends. An interesting fact about Chris is that he is an Eagle Scout.

We appreciate Chris and the constant smile and positive energy he brings each and every day.

Southern California Basin Wildland Fires

The recent fires in the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County unfolded in our personal lives, across the media, and on every social media platform. We all know family members and loved ones who had to endure and witness firsthand what a fire disaster looks like, and who will now bravely walk the recovery process as they work to rebuild their lives.

The City of Vista Fire Department, like all other fire departments in Northern San Diego County, participates in California’s mutual aid system. This means that when a disaster strikes in our state, we send help. We send personnel on fire engines to assist with fire suppression, and we also send trained personnel to help with specific logistical functions during these types of disasters.

Vista Fire Engine 408 (OES stands for Office of Emergency Services) was deployed at the early onset of the Palisades Fire. They were involved in fire suppression and rescue missions from the start. Captain Matt Kennedy, Engineer Christian Haney, Firefighter Brent Nogle, and Firefighter Chase Sessions were part of the crew that responded. The crew was deployed for fourteen days and has incredible stories of the magnitude of the disaster, as well as deep sadness for those directly affected.

Fire Captain Ross Vagelatos was deployed as a member of San Diego USAR TF-8 (San Diego Urban Search and Rescue, Task Force 8). The primary mission of the USAR teams was to search through the rubble for body recovery and identification efforts.

Firefighter/Paramedic Jacob Donoff was deployed as a “technical” specialist for the communications team as a “single resource.” This means Firefighter/Paramedic Donoff is trained in radio communications and is part of the logistical team ensuring all personnel at the incident have proper working communications—whether it’s radios that need to be programmed, cell phones, or any number of other communication needs that arise.

The City of Vista Fire Department is always ready to provide mutual aid when requested. All crews and personnel were deeply impacted by what they witnessed and their specific missions. They all share their thoughts and continue to keep the people of Los Angeles in their hearts.

Golf Tournament Fundraiser

On February 4, 2025, the Vista Firefighters Association Local 4107 presented a check to both the Fallbrook Firefighters and Murrieta Firefighters, using the funds raised from the 2024 Andy Valenta Memorial Golf Tournament.

The beneficiaries were Nina Ballard, a member of the Murrieta Firefighters Association Local 3530’s family and a flight nurse with Reach Air, as well as Courtney Hager, a member of the Fallbrook Firefighters Local 1622’s family and an elementary school teacher.

The total amount raised was $27,000. Vista Firefighters Local 4107 is proud to support both locals and their families, as both recipients are currently battling cancer. Local 4107 would also like to thank their Diamond sponsors: Watkins Wellness, Murrieta Firefighters Local 3530, and Reach Air.

Eating dinner together every day is a big deal at the fire station. It’s a time when we all gather around the table, serve up dinner, and relax. It’s never just about the meal; it’s about the camaraderie, the informal education shared through stories and memories, and the chance to learn about each other and our lives outside of living, training, and responding to emergencies together. We thought it would be fun to share a tried-and-true recipe each month for you all to try.

Chicken and Cinnamon Rolls

Chicken and waffles? Yesterday’s news. Today’s menu is all about chicken and cinnamon rolls. Why? Because we all love a “cheat” day! You can roll your eyes now, but take one bite, and you’ll be a believer. For the cinnamon rolls, you can either follow a recipe and make your own, or use the refrigerated canned variety (just cook according to the directions on the can) or pick some up from one of our local grocery stores.

For the Chicken:

• 1 package of chicken tenders (adjust to your family's size)
• 1 carton of buttermilk
• Equal parts of both flour and panko breadcrumbs
• 3 eggs, beaten and whipped
• 1 cup milk
• Garlic salt, pepper, and onion powder

Instructions:

1. Brine the chicken in the buttermilk. We like to do this first thing when we come on shift and let it soak right up until it’s cooking time. Coupled with the double dredging of the chicken, this is the secret.
2. Prepare the coating mixture. Mix together the flour, panko, and spices.
3. Heat enough oil to deep fry the chicken in your trusty chicken frying pan.
4. Double dredge the chicken: Take the chicken out of the buttermilk. Place it in the flour/panko mixture, then dip it into the milk/egg mixture, and then back into the flour/panko dredge.
5. Fry the chicken: Once the oil is up to cooking temperature, cook the tenders until golden brown, then place them on a plate lined with paper towels. After all tenders are cooked, sprinkle them with a little salt.
6. Serve with the cinnamon rolls. We recommend taking a bite of chicken and a bite of cinnamon roll on the same fork. Trust us—you’ll thank us.

Side Note: We like to serve a fruit salad alongside this dinner for a little bit of redemption!

Al comenzar el mes de febrero, reflexionamos sobre los recientes incendios forestales que han devastado parte de Los Ángeles, y nuestros corazones están con las familias, las personas y las comunidades que se han visto afectadas. La pérdida de hogares, negocios y, trágicamente, vidas, nos recuerda el poder impredecible de la naturaleza. Acompañamos a los afectados en estos difíciles momentos y les damos nuestro más sentido pésame. 

En este momento de tragedia, queremos reconocer los increíbles esfuerzos de los bomberos, paramédicos, policías y trabajadores de emergencia que arriesgaron sus vidas para proteger a los demás. Su valor y dedicación son un testimonio de la fortaleza de nuestra comunidad. Les rendimos homenaje por su abnegación y valentía.

Incendios forestales en la cuenca del sur de California

Los recientes incendios en la ciudad de Los Ángeles y en el condado de Los Ángeles se han desarrollado en nuestras vidas personales, en los medios de comunicación y en todas las plataformas de las redes sociales. Todos conocemos a miembros de la familia y seres queridos que tuvieron que soportar y presenciar de primera mano lo que parece un desastre de fuego, y que ahora valientemente caminar el proceso de recuperación a medida que trabajan para reconstruir sus vidas.

El Departamento de Bomberos de la Ciudad de Vista, al igual que todos los demás departamentos de bomberos del norte del condado de San Diego, participa en el sistema de ayuda mutua de California. Esto significa que cuando ocurre un desastre en nuestro estado, enviamos ayuda. Torneo de golf para recaudar fondos

El 4 de febrero de 2025, la Asociación de Bomberos de Vista Local 4107 entregó un cheque tanto a los Bomberos de Fallbrook como a los Bomberos de Murrieta, utilizando los fondos recaudados en el Torneo de Golf en Memoria de Andy Valenta 2024.

Los beneficiarios fueron Nina Ballard, miembro de la familia del Local 3530 de la Asociación de Bomberos de Murrieta y enfermera de vuelo de Reach Air, y Courtney Hager, miembro de la familia del Local 1622 de los Bomberos de Fallbrook y profesora de primaria.

Cenar juntos todos los días es algo muy importante en el parque de bomberos. Es un momento en el que todos nos reunimos alrededor de la mesa, servimos la cena y nos relajamos. Nunca se trata sólo de la comida; se trata de la camaradería, la educación informal compartida a través de historias y recuerdos, y la oportunidad de aprender unos de otros y nuestras vidas fuera de vivir, entrenar y responder a emergencias juntos. Hemos pensado que sería divertido compartir una receta probada cada mes para que todos la probéis.

Pollo y bollos de canela

¿Pollo y gofres? Las noticias de ayer. El menú de hoy es pollo y rollos de canela. ¿Por qué? Porque a todos nos encantan los días «trampa». Ahora puedes poner los ojos en blanco, pero prueba un bocado y te convencerás. Para los rollos de canela, puedes seguir una receta y hacerlos tú mismo, o usar la variedad enlatada de Pillsbury (sólo tienes que cocinar según las instrucciones de la lata) o comprar algunos en una de nuestras tiendas de comestibles locales.

Para el pollo

• 1 paquete de filetes de pollo (ajústalo al tamaño de tu familia)
• 1 cartón de suero de leche
• Partes iguales de harina y pan rallado Panko
• 3 huevos batidos
• 1 taza de leche
• Sal de ajo, pimienta y cebolla en polvo

Instrucciones:

1. Poner el pollo en salmuera en el suero de leche. Nos gusta hacerlo a primera hora cuando entramos de turno y dejarlo en remojo hasta la hora de cocinar. Junto con el doble rebozado del pollo, éste es el secreto.
2. Preparar la mezcla del rebozado. Mezclar la harina, el Panko y las especias.
3. Caliente aceite suficiente para freír el pollo en su sartén de confianza.
4. Rebozar dos veces el pollo: Saque el pollo del suero de leche. Pásalo por la mezcla de harina y Panko, luego por la mezcla de leche y huevo, y de nuevo por la mezcla de harina y Panko.
5. Fría el pollo: Una vez que el aceite esté a temperatura de cocción, cocine cada ternera hasta que estén doradas, luego colóquelas en un plato forrado con papel toalla. Después de que todos los tenders estén cocinados, espolvoréelos con un poco de sal.
6. Sírvalos con los rollos de canela. Recomendamos tomar un bocado de pollo y un bocado de rollo de canela en el mismo tenedor. Confíe en nosotros, nos lo agradecerá.
