Age-Friendly Minnesota: What Is It and How Can You Get Involved?

Age-Friendly Minnesota (AFMN) is a statewide initiative working to make our communities better places to grow older. It’s about making sure that as we age, we have access to resources, services, and environments that support health, independence, and connection.

At the heart of this effort is Minnesota’s 10-Year Blueprint for Aging, developed from feedback gathered from thousands of Minnesotans. It outlines priorities like affordable housing, accessible transportation, strong health care options, digital access, and reducing isolation-especially for those who face greater barriers to these things.

In 2025, AFMN launched numerous Action Teams comprised of groups of older adults, caregivers, professionals, and community partners working together to put the Blueprint into practice.

These teams are focused on creating real, lasting change in specific areas that impact how we age in Minnesota and narrowing down the larger picture into actionable steps towards improving aging in community in Minnesota. For more info, click here.

Here at ESNS, the Vital Living team is actively engaged in two of the current action teams:

-Equitable Opportunities for Physical Health, Mental Health, and Well-Being

Caitlin Enright, our Vital Living Program Manager, co-leads this team alongside a partner from the University of Minnesota. It’s focused on ensuring that all older adults-especially those who experience disparities-have access to meaningful, culturally responsive health and wellness supports across the state.

-Digital Engagement

Michelle Wolney, Vital Living Program Coordinator, is serving on this team, which is working to improve digital access and inclusion, support for using technology, and opportunities to stay connected online.

Join us!

These Action Teams are open to everyone-not just professionals. If you are a caregiver, or have lived experience navigating aging in our community, your perspective is valuable! Sharing your experience helps shape the future of aging in Minnesota. Together, we can make it better for everyone. Your voice matters!

The Vital Living Team

NE Day Spot Friend Volunteers Needed!

Fridays|9:30AM-1:30 PM

4th Saturday of the Month|9:30AM-1:30PM

NE Day Spot Friends play an important role during our dementia-friendly NE Day Spot Respite Program. On Fridays from 9:30AM-1:30PM, you will socialize with participants, provide support during activities, and help with setup and cleanup. Join us and make a difference in the lives of local adults and caregivers-and have fun doing it! No hands-on care required.

Some of the perks of being a NE Day Spot Friend are:

  • Laughing and smiling until your cheeks hurt while swapping jokes and stories in our coffee hour.
  • Getting your body moving and grooving for the day with some group stretches.
  • Enjoying and participating in musical activities led by talented musicians.

Help give individuals facing dementia a welcoming space they associate with friends and fun. You would also allow caregivers the priceless gift of time—moments to themselves in order to recharge, relax, or accomplish a task. A small window in their week where they can breathe and take a moment for themselves with the reassurance that the person they care for is safely enjoying themselves too. Flexible scheduling!

Questions about volunteering as a NE Day Spot Friend or additional Vital Living volunteer opportunities? Contact Caitlin at 612-787-4023 or cenright@esns.org.

Vital Living Guided Meditation

Take a moment to relax with a guided audio meditation! During high stress times, it's too easy to let self-care fall by the wayside.

If caregiving for a relative, partner, neighbor, friend, or child is causing difficult emotions, contact our Vital Living team at VitalLiving@esns.org for support and resources.
