Vital Living supports an intergenerational community that values and respects everyone, increases understanding and engagement, and focuses on health and well-being for all generations.

Fall Renewal and Reinvention

Happy September, also known as Healthy Aging Month! This month is now in its 33rd year of observance and is part of the National Healthy Aging Campaign, which was designed to focus on the positive aspects of growing older and created by Carolyn Worthington.

Each year, the campaign chooses a Healthy Aging Month theme, and this year's is one we especially like: "Never Too Late To Reinvent Yourself!" According to the Healthy Aging website, this theme reminds us that "no matter your age or stage, it’s always possible to chart a new course."

Worthington says, "We created the month to inspire people to take stock of their health and life goals in a realistic and positive way. September was a natural fit—it’s a time when people feel ready to start fresh, much like a grown-up version of back-to-school season."

How might you reinvent yourself, your relationships, and your activities this fall? Healthy Aging has 10 tips on their website, including "add play to your day" and "be a lifelong learner": click here to read them all!

In October, we have two opportunities to jump into lifelong learning here at ESNS through upcoming class offerings from our Community Garden Team. Free to attend!

*NE Day Spot Friend Volunteers Needed!*

Fridays|9:30AM-1:30 PM

4th Saturday of the Month|9:30AM-1:30PM

NE Day Spot Friends play an important role during our dementia-friendly NE Day Spot Respite Program. On Fridays from 9:30AM-1:30PM, you will socialize with participants, provide support during activities, and help with setup and cleanup. Join us and make a difference in the lives of local adults and caregivers-and have fun doing it! No hands-on care required.

Some of the perks of being a NE Day Spot Friend are:

  • Laughing and smiling until your cheeks hurt while swapping jokes and stories in our coffee hour.
  • Getting your body moving and grooving for the day with some group stretches.
  • Enjoying and participating in musical activities led by talented musicians.

Help give individuals facing dementia a welcoming space they associate with friends and fun. You would also allow caregivers the priceless gift of time—moments to themselves in order to recharge, relax, or accomplish a task. A small window in their week where they can breathe and take a moment for themselves with the reassurance that the person they care for is safely enjoying themselves too. Flexible scheduling!

Questions about volunteering as a NE Day Spot Friend or additional Vital Living volunteer opportunities? Contact Caitlin at 612-787-4023 or cenright@esns.org.

Caregiver Survey

Many people don’t think of themselves as caregivers-but if you help a family member, friend, or neighbor, you may be one. Caregivers often:

  • R – Recognize: Notice and respond to the needs of a loved one
  • A – Assist: Provide practical help with daily activities or medical needs
  • I – Include: Keep loved ones connected to family, friends, and community
  • S – Support: Offer encouragement, understanding, and companionship
  • E – Engage: Advocate for their wellbeing and coordinate care

Family caregivers are unique because their primary relationship is personal-as a spouse, partner, sibling, child, grandchild, neighbor, or friend-yet they also provide essential care and support.

If you are a caregiver now, have ever been one in the past, or know someone who is, we invite you to take our short survey.

Your input will greatly help us better respond to the needs of caregivers and strengthen support in our community.

Vital Living Guided Meditation

Take a moment to relax with a guided audio meditation! During high stress times, it's too easy to let self-care fall by the wayside.

If caregiving for a relative, partner, neighbor, friend, or child is causing difficult emotions, contact our Vital Living team at VitalLiving@esns.org for support and resources.
