Friends,
At long last, summer is upon us and we are counting our blessings for all Western North Carolina has to offer during these warm, sunny months. At the top of our list is our caring and proactive community, especially when it comes to the health of friends and neighbors.
In this month’s Vital Signs, you’ll learn about our friend, Hilary, who leaned in to help her community – and her community hospital – after her own health scare. We’re also excited about the groundbreaking of our new Cath Lab expansion project, a much needed solution to the ongoing need for local, high-quality cardiac care.
Lastly, planning is well underway for our first-ever Casino Night benefit, coming up later this summer at Burntshirt Vineyards. Tickets are limited, so get them while they’re hot. You won’t want to miss this amazing night of fun and games – all in support of UNC Health Pardee!
With gratitude,

Hearts Can’t Wait – We’re Growing!
We are excited to share that work is now underway on the buildout of UNC Health Pardee’s newest cath lab. This growth is another exciting step on our path to expanding cardiology care and services for residents in our region and will reduce the need for potentially dangerous patient transport.
In this fiscal year, more than 1,000 heart cath procedures took place at UNC Health Pardee; a number that has increased 300% through the last six years. As 1 of only 86 hospitals in the country recognized for treatment of heart attack patients by the American College of Cardiology, UNC Health Pardee is well-positioned for this important development.
Curious about our commitment to cardiac care? Contact Amy Treece to attend an exclusive behind-the-scenes cardiology tour, offering a bird’s eye view of our future plans. As always, your support is integral to our success. Give a gift from the heart in support of cardiac care by clicking here.

Women of Hope Update
When our Women Helping Women program began back in 1997, many women weren’t receiving recommended breast screenings, and there was a widespread stigma attached to a breast cancer diagnosis. To raise awareness, 73 “Women of Hope” shared their personal portraits and words of wisdom through the years at our annual Women Helping Women luncheon gathering.
We are grateful to our Women of Hope for serving as advocates for the importance of early detection through mammograms. This year, we’re excited to announce that we will be building on the momentum they created by expanding the event’s focus to providing better emotional and financial support to women facing health challenges.
With this goal in mind, we are sunsetting the Women of Hope program with a deep sense of gratitude. In doing so, we also applaud the results of their brave stories, as women in our region now have a profoundly improved understanding that mammograms are a critical part of their personal health plans.
Stay tuned for more exciting information about Women Helping Women this fall, as it evolves to meet the growing needs of our community or give a gift today in support of this vital initiative by clicking here.

Fun with a Purpose
After discovering a lump during a mammogram (which fortunately was non-cancerous), Lake Lure resident Hilary Yoxall counted her blessings and vowed to help connect more women with affordable mammograms.
Learning about Pardee’s Women Helping Women initiative inspired Hillary to enlist the support of her friend Mary Bobek, owner of Lastrada at Lake Lure restaurant, to raise $1,000 for Women Helping Women in 30 days through t-shirt sales, bake sales and raffles. Hilary is planning more events this fall and is also working to bring the Mammo on the Go bus out to Lake Lure connecting women with mammograms in a central, convenient location.
Like Hilary, your private event can help fuel Pardee Hospital Foundation’s mission. Even better, our staff is here to offer guidance whether it’s your first time throwing a benefit event or you've been doing it for years. If you are interested in hosting your own signature event or fundraiser on behalf of Pardee Hospital Foundation, please contact Sarah Swartz, Annual Giving and Events Manager at sarah.swartz@unchealth.unc.edu.

UNC Health Pardee Receives TCAR Certification
Dawn Styes dealt with carotid artery disease and the pain associated with it for years. After having an initial surgery to treat the plaque buildup, Dawn was closely monitored by Pardee vascular surgeon, Dr. Andrew Sticco (pictured), in the event that the disease returned – which would put her at high risk of having a stroke.
This year, her disease hit a critical point and could no longer be managed with just imaging – she needed surgery – and a different type of surgery usually NOT performed at Pardee. Thankfully, Pardee recently earned TCAR certification to perform a minimally-invasive procedure which helps improve carotid artery blood flow by treating and preventing blockages that can cause strokes. Dr. Sticoo was able to perform this surgery for Dawn, eliminating the need to travel for care.
Dawn and Dr. Sticco have forged a relationship over the years, and had Pardee not been TCAR-certified, she would have had to be sent elsewhere for the procedure.
This innovative step by Pardee and the vascular team to be able to offer this procedure allowed Dawn to maintain her continuity of care with a team that she had come to trust and rely on to guide her medical journey.
