Annual Women Helping Women Event Speaker Celebrated Courage, Honesty and Being There for Each Other
With wit, humor, and the kind of authenticity that comes from living through life's trials, Dr. Kate Bowler, New York Times bestselling author, podcast host, Duke University professor, and cancer survivor, was the keynote speaker at last month's Women Helping Women Luncheon.
As a key component of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Pardee Hospital Foundation once again turned pink for the month of October.
With unflinching honesty, Bowler shared how she grappled with her own cancer diagnosis, her ambition, and her faith as she tried to come to terms with her limitations in a culture that says anything is possible. Bowler reminded the audience that "perfection is impossible, but transformation isn't.
"We need each other if we're going to tell the truth," she said. "Life is beautiful and terrible, full of hope and despair and everything in between—and there’s no cure for being human."
Bowler praised and blessed the audience of 400+ attendees, telling them that are strong, courageous, caring, and compassionate in their commitment to the women who need them most.
Since 1997, Women Helping Women has evolved into a significant force for good within the community, beginning with a focus on recommended breast screenings and challenging the stigma attached to a breast cancer diagnosis.
Thanks to awareness raised through this annual gathering, women in our region now have a profoundly improved understanding that mammograms are a critical part of their health plans.
