Volume 12, Issue 9: September, 2025
"The fact that our legal system has become so tolerant of police lying indicates how corrupt our criminal justice system has become by declarations of war, 'get tough' mantras, and a seemingly insatiable appetite for locking up and locking out the poorest and darkest among us." Michelle Alexander

Mental Health Committee Member Spotlight: Cheryl Jean
Cheryl shares that, “I hope that my work inspires young women, women, and individuals to support your community.” Community is an important aspect to her work, in that it is unifying, encouraging togetherness. She reflects on a person’s sense of community changing throughout their life and experiences, but that you always belong in one, and it is important to cultivate it and make it the best it can be. Her own inspiration is derived from everything she does but particularly from her two sons Reginald and James - she hopes to show them, and everyone,
that “you can do anything you want. The world is yours.”

The Cost of Cuts: What the Big Beautiful Bill Means for Food and Healthcare Access | | |
The “One Big Beautiful Bill" is a U.S. federal law enacted by the 119th Congress, comprising tax and spending policies, was signed into law on July 4th, 2025. It features substantial tax cuts for certain groups and boosts spending on border security, defense, and energy. Funding for these measures is achieved through significant reductions in healthcare and nutrition programs, including Medicaid and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).
Major Components of the Bill:
-
Work Requirements: According to House and Senate proposals, able bodied individuals aged 19 to 64 applying for Medicaid or enrolled through the ACA expansion must work or participate in qualifying activities for 80 hours per month.
-
Increasing State Cost Burden: States with SNAP error rates above 6% must now pay up to 15% of benefit costs and cover 75% of administrative costs, up from 50/50.
-
Adjunctive Eligibility: Policies that limit SNAP and Medicaid eligibility will then indirectly affect WIC, requiring the families to prove an alternative form of income which they may not have.
Taking Action:
- Many organizations such as the National WIC Association, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and several state's Attorney General are taking action...
- Greater Boston has many locations for both SNAP and WIC. These approved grocery sites across the Greater Boston area include a wide range of major supermarket chains to local corner stores and farmer's markets.
- Below is a map from the abundanceboston.com website and app that accept EBT cards for SNAP purchases and WIC EBT cards or paper checks approved for certain WIC item
