The Risks and Prevention of Maltreatment

of Children with Disabilities

Children with disabilities are at least three times more likely to be abused or neglected than their peers without disabilities, and they are more likely to be seriously injured or harmed by maltreatment. This bulletin describes the scope of the problem, risk factors, and strategies for prevention. It examines the problem in terms of statistics and research; covers critical issues encountered when assessing a child with a disability for maltreatment; and provides information about promising prevention, collaboration, and training approaches.

Recognize, React, Report

Child Advocacy Services is proud to share the Recognize, React, Report resource. This is a community resource for protecting children and preventing child abuse. This resource was originally designed because people often witness child abuse and neglect but do not understand their responsibility in reacting to the incident or making a report. Also, children themselves have a difficult time expressing concerns or understanding abuse. The interactive design makes this an excellent resource for adults and children to review together.
