ABI Participates in Department of Energy Roundtable

ABI Board Member Julie Vande Hoef and ABI Director of Public Policy Brad Hartkopf joined Daniel Simmons, assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), and others for a tour of the Ames Laboratory on Tuesday. Following the tour, there was a roundtable discussion about key issues for the advanced manufacturing industry. Read more .
Iowa Sets Another Record for New Business Filings
Secretary of State Paul Pate declared Iowans broke the record for new business filings with 24,720 filings this fiscal year. This is the fourth consecutive year the record has been broken and reflects a 4.5% increase from fiscal year 2018. Fast Track Filing was put into effect in 2018, making the process much more efficient. Secretary Pate noted his enthusiasm for the increase and emphasized how vital a growing business ... Miller-Meeks Considers 2nd District Congressional Bid
First-term State Senator Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Ottumwa) announced Monday she is exploring a run for the Republican nomination for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District. Miller-Meeks, an ophthalmologist and a former director of the Department of Public Health, made the announcement in a letter she wrote to Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Jeff Kaufmann, where she submitted her resignation from the state central committee. Nunn Decides to Forgo Run for Congress 
Earlier this week, another first-term state senator announced he would not seek the Republican nomination for the 3rd Congressional District and would instead serve out the remainder of his state senate term. State Senator Zach Nunn (R-Bondurant), a military officer, announced in May that he would be hosting a listening tour around the 3rd District to see whether he might run for Congress. Read more .

Employer Innovation Fund Rule to Go Into Effect
Iowa Workforce Development has adopted and filed the Employer Innovation Fund rule. The rule will go into effect on August 21, 2019. IWD reported that no comments were received and no changes were made to the initial notice. Read the  final rule . Reminder: All applications for funding are due August 1, 2019. Federal Spotlight: House Votes to Repeal Cadillac Tax
On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved passage of  HR 748 , which eliminates the “Cadillac Tax.” The bill, the Middle Class Health Benefits Tax Repeal Act of 2019, passed the lower chamber with a strong bipartisan vote of 419-6. The tax was created under the Affordable Care Act in 2010 as a means of helping to pay for the healthcare law. It adds a 40% surcharge tax to high-cost employer healthcare plans. Read more .

AFC Industries, Inc., a portfolio company of Incline Equity Partners, has announced it has completed an acquisition of The Boulder Company, a value-added distributor of industrial components to original equipment manufacturers.
