Lent Begins This Week!
Ash Wednesday this week marks the beginning of Lent, the 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in preparation for Easter. This is a season of repentance and conversion - a time to create habits of the mind and heart that are centered on Christ.

As a reminder, students in grades K-12 will celebrate Mass on Ash Wednesday, March 1st (students in grades K-8 will  attend Mass at 9:30 a.m. on March 1st; high school students will celebrate Mass at 11:30 a.m.). Please be sure students dress in Church uniforms on Wednesday, March 1st. There won't be a school Mass this Thursday, March 2nd.
Retreats Offer Opportunities for Spiritual Renewal
This week, St. Anne-Pacelli freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors are participating in class retreats at St. Anne Church. "The retreats are a chance for our students to 'retreat' from their busy lives and spend a day of school away from the classroom," says Mr. Jeff Chardos, High School Religion Teacher. "It's an opportunity to bond as a class through fun games and activities and a chance to grow along their own individual spiritual journey."

This year's class retreats are led by national retreat leader Tony Bellizzi. He leads retreats that open hearts, energize souls and change lives. His message brings young people the good news of the saving power of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and participation in the life of his church.

Mr. Bellizzi will also lead a retreat for St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School parents this Thursday, March 2nd from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in St. Anne Church. His talk, entitled "Parenting the Greatest Gift," will include practical parenting tips and include opportunities for discussion.

National History Day
National History Day 2017
National History Day actively engages students in Mrs. Hollie Queener's 8th Grade Social Studies class in the historical process. Over the course of the school year, students select a topic related to the year's theme: "Taking a Stand in History." They engage in a program of research, in both primary and secondary sources, designed to investigate their topic and answer specific research questions. Their results are then presented through one of a variety of categories, including e xhibits, papers, documentaries, websites and performances. All entries, regardless of category, include a written component, known as the "process paper" which discusses the reasoning behind the project, the research process and the significance of the topic to the theme. Students must also prepare and submit an annotated bibliography. The top three in each category move on to Regionals at LaGrange College on March 17th!

Getting a Global Education
Quebec Trip
A small group of students from St. Anne-Pacelli's high school French class recently visited Quebec City, Canada, for four exciting and fun-filled days during the famous Carnival festivity!  During their trip, they learned how to forge copper, rode a dog sled and cooked maple syrup. The students also experienced what life was like for French-Canadian soldiers during the 1700s. They had a hands-on lesson in a different culture, a peculiar cuisine, a new language and, last but not least, experienced a very cold Canadian winter.
Cohesion
St. Anne Church Parochial Vicar Fr. Brian O'Shaughnessy opens the first CohesiĆ³n meeting with a special prayer. Led by Lower School Spanish Teacher Mrs. Elizabeth Mendoza, the new after-school club for St. Anne-Pacelli Hispanic students in grades 3-8 meets weekly and is a place to learn more about Spanish-speaking countries, foods and traditions. Participants also have the opportunity to practice Spanish and share fellowship with friends.

The Vikings Boys Varsity Soccer Team is on the right track with three straight wins after opening up the season with a loss to Hardaway. T.J. Fick has led the team with seven goals with many Vikings picking up assists along the way. St. Anne-Pacelli has played some competitive teams so far, including 5A Northside, Central Phenix City, and 6A Lee County on the 3-game winning streak.

The Vikings Girls Varsity Soccer Team is coming along and improving with every game. The team is ready to start its own winning streak this Wednesday, March 1st versus Opelika.

The Vikings Middle School Girls Soccer Team is a very young team this season. The girls are very enthusiastic and eager to learn new soccer skills. They work hard each and every day. Those players that encourage each other, try their best and follow the core values of our school are the ones chosen as captains for the week ahead.

The Vikings Middle School Boys Soccer Team started the season strong with a dominating 8-0 win over Saint Teresa on February 16th at Deimel Field. The Vikings controlled the game from the onset, with Lucas Lesh scoring two quick goals within the first 10 minutes. Conar Blevins, Elliott Lopez, and Jose Vazquez, all added goals in the first half for a 5-0 halftime lead. In the second half, Dylan Swinyard scored an exciting goal and Reece Lenig and Alex Errasti added goals from the penalty spot.

Baseball
The 2017 Vikings Baseball Season is off to a fast start, with early games against local teams such as Jordan, Spencer, Manchester and Brookstone. The 2017 St. Anne-Pacelli Diamond Day was a success, with the tournament proving to be an effective fundraiser. Mount De Sales was the top performing team, walking away with victories over Bowdon and Spencer.

The Vikings Middle School Baseball Team looks to host its first home games on  March 4th  against St. Luke. Come out and support your Vikings!

Tennis
The St. Anne-Pacelli Vikings Tennis season is off to a great start! The boys team is currently 1-0 in our region, while the girls team is 0-1. Jordyn Dawson and Sarah Bouthillier remain undefeated this tennis season for Girls Singles.
