As many of you may have heard, powerful 7.7- and 6.6-magnitude earthquakes struck Panama on Friday, October 9, and another 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck on Monday, October 12. The tremors caused structural damage across multiple regions, cracking residential homes, damaging historic churches, disrupting power lines, and sending thousands of frightened residents into the streets. Miraculously, despite the severity of the quakes, no fatalities have been reported.
I invite us all to unite in prayer for all those affected by this disaster, and to ask God's blessing on Panama as communities assess structural damage, care for displaced families, and begin the work of recovery.
Let us also pray for Pope Leo XIV and for every medical professional, caregiver, and companion entrusted with his care. As he witnesses to the Gospel in this time of suffering, may Almighty God grant him strength and healing through the grace of Jesus Christ during his recovery from surgery and ongoing journey with cancer, and may Christ’s peace guide all who care for him with wisdom, compassion, and patience.
