Thank you for opening Vincentian Voices today. Have you ever noticed yourself looking back on your life with more wisdom and faith than when you were younger? This week, Fr. Tom McKenna, CM, reflects on St. Paul’s words of encouragement as we grow older. Let's begin.

Dear friends,

Last Tuesday, the three U.S. provincials, Fr. Marek Sobczak, CM; Fr. Joe Williams, CM; and I gathered for the National Conference of Vincentian Provinces meeting in St. Louis. It is always nice to be together, and in the morning session we were able to share how each of us is doing and talk about activities in each province. The afternoon session was dedicated to our business meeting.

The first topic was the future of the New England Province. Superior General Fr. Tomaž Mavrič, CM, wrote that Fr. Sobczak had been reconfirmed as Visitor of the Province of New England for another three years, adding, “during which [time] he will enter into dialogue with the Province of Poland to verify the possibility of its reconfiguration with it.” Later this month, Fr. Sobczak will meet with the provincial of Poland, so he took advantage of the opportunity to speak with us in advance of that meeting. He was able to tap into the experience and wisdom of the Western Province, which underwent a reconfiguration about 15 years ago, and he was assured of the support of the other two U.S. provinces.

Another topic on the agenda was formation. We shared what each province was doing and talked about how our programs can connect. The Western Province has candidates for a discernment program and other young men who have shown interest in exploring a Vincentian vocation. Continuing on the topic of vocations, we agreed to emphasize the promotion of the vocation of brothers in the Vincentian community.

Fr. Williams reported on the Vincentian Leadership Program, which was held in St. Louis last month. Fr. Erik Sanchez, CM; Fr. Walner Diaz, CM; and Alex Palacios, CM, participated from the Eastern Province, along with confreres working in the Western Province who are from Kenya and India.

Vincentian insights from the Province

Fr. Aidan Rooney, CM

“I was talking to one of our seminarians who talked about two ways of doing evangelization. And, he was right on ... Sometimes, we want to present a welcome to others. It's a Christian virtue, hospitality, to make a space at the table for all people, but sometimes we never get to the proclamation of Jesus. And so, the virtue of hospitality degrades into what is a kind of civic virtue of tolerance, allowing everyone to be the way they need to be and not saying, ‘I have something special to offer you and His name is Jesus.’”

“While the Scriptures shed light on every age group, there are passages which are tailored to one particular life stage. The 4th chapter of Paul’s Second letter to Timothy speaks directly to those in their senior years. And that’s because in it, Paul himself not only identifies as an elder, but also a believer who is looking to his past, commenting on his present, and laying out his desires for the future.”
