Message from the Minister

Dear Spiritual Community,
In the 1st chapter of the Book of Genesis we read, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth."
This story is not an historical account of the beginning life on earth, but an allegory describing human beings' true relationship with nature. To anyone with an environmental awareness the words "subdue" and "dominion" leap out of this Bible verse like giant red flags. Do we interpret these words to mean that humanity has carte blanche do whatever it wants to with the earth? If we look at the condition of the planet today we can literally see how this mentality has created incredible imbalances in nature. Extinctions of thousands of species, clear cutting of old-growth forests, and the toxic pollution by our industry have unfortunately become an everyday norm.
The creator, however you understand that concept, never intended for humans to degrade and destroy the planet. That's just crazy, but look at what has been done. To "subdue" and have "dominion" is not about humanity exercising its free will, it is about being stewards, custodians of the planet.
On April 22 we celebrate Earth Day 2019. People all over the planet are waking up to the perils of our continuing to treat our home, our planet, as the dumping ground of our collective creative endeavors. This spring we will be partnering with the Unitarian Universalist and 1st Presbyterian congregations here in Eau Claire in hosting events at our respective ministries that promote a greater awareness of climate change. If you would like to be on our planning team for our event, please let me know. Look for details in future newsletters and e-mails.
With richest blessings,
Reverend Alden Studebaker is available to support you through spiritual counseling, prayer, hospital and other visitation, weddings, funerals/memorials, christenings, and special blessings. His private church e-mail address is revalden@aol.com.   His office hours are variable depending on the week, but he is consistently in his office on Tuesdays - Thursdays. To make an appointment, call the church office at 715-836-0010. In case of an urgent need, call his mobile no. 715-450-1868.
