A Word From Mark

Dear Friends,

As we enter Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible impact your support has had in helping Radiant Futures. Since 1976, we’ve been committed to serving survivors of domestic violence, and it’s because of donors like you that we’ve been able to provide life-saving services to survivors and their families.

We invite you to join us for our Open House on Thursday, October 3rd, from 4-7 PM. This is a wonderful opportunity to see firsthand the work that your contributions make possible. Explore our campus, meet our passionate team, and learn more about how we’re transforming lives.

Throughout the month, we’ll also be hosting several events such as our Radiant Futures Panel Discussion being held at our Anaheim Campus, and our 3/4 Time Dueling Pianos, aimed at raising awareness about domestic violence. These events are a great way to deepen your understanding of the issues and see how we can continue working together to create a safer, more compassionate community.

Thank you for your continued partnership and generosity.

With appreciation,

Mark

Finding Strength in Uncertainty

When Daniella first visited the Family Resource Center, she didn’t know exactly what she was looking for. She only knew that something felt wrong. There was a heaviness she couldn’t shake—an emotional weight that had grown too heavy to carry alone. The mother of a three-year-old, she wanted to find help, not just for herself, but for her child. Her Family Support Specialist at the center recommended the Personal Empowerment Program (PEP), a series of classes taught by Radiant Future advocates aimed at helping individuals find strength and clarity.

Daniella decided to attend, and as she sat in those classes, she slowly began to see her situation in a new light. It was during PEP that the realization hit: she was in a domestic violence situation. The father of her child, the man she thought she knew, was not just controlling—he was abusive. The abuse wasn’t just emotional; it was physical as well, and it had slowly eroded her confidence and peace of mind.

Despite this difficult realization, Daniella completed the program. But instead of feeling a sense of relief, her anxiety symptoms worsened. The fear and uncertainty grew stronger, and she knew she needed more help. That’s when she turned to Radiant Futures, where she began individual counseling sessions to start the next phase of her healing journey.

35 Years of Progress: Reflecting on the History of Domestic Violence Awareness & Advocacy

In 1989, October became the National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (NDVAM). As we go into October of 2024, 35 years after the first NDVAM,  it is important to note the complex history domestic violence has and how we have gotten to where we are today in advocacy and breaking the cycle of violence.

The history of domestic violence varies significantly across different cultures and historical periods. Over time, the evolution of societal attitudes and legal support toward domestic violence reflects the changing understandings of gender roles, power dynamics, and human rights.

Going back to the Middle Ages, domestic violence was normalized and justified as it was seen as part of the patriarchal structure. Laws and social norms permitted husbands significant authority over their wives, including physical discipline, or what is now identified as physical abuse. The idea that a husband could correct his wife’s behavior through physical means was entrenched in legal and religious doctrine. The Rule of Thumb was one of these laws that the Church sanctioned, that stated men may use a rod or stick to physically abuse their wives if it was no wider than the size of their thumb. These laws and allowances justified the physical harm that was inflicted on the women of the time but has left a mark on societal norms that we still see today.
