Nursing Alumna Honored with

CBS 6 Gives Award

Southside Virginia Community College proudly celebrates Katrina Manning, a 2023 graduate of the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Weekend Program, who was recently recognized with a CBS 6 Gives Award for her extraordinary compassion and dedication as a nurse.

Manning, now a Cardiac Registered Nurse at Bon Secours Richmond Health System, was nominated by a patient’s family for going above and beyond by attending her patient's funeral and offering exceptional support during a time of grief.

Reflecting on the moment, Manning shared, “You could tell the kind of man he was by the love in the room. I think of the family often.”

Kalbacker Award

Bruce Jones (left) receives congratulations from Leslie Perkins, College Navigator at Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC), as the 2025 recipient of the Florence Daniel Riepe Kalbacker Leadership and Community Service Award. Established by the Kalbacker family, this award honors Mrs. Kalbacker’s enduring legacy of service to the community, education, and SVCC. A native of Concord, Virginia, Bruce is currently enrolled in the General Studies/Agribusiness program. Upon graduation, he plans to pursue a degree in Agricultural Economics at Virginia Tech.

The Student Behind the Mascot

A year ago, one spirited student stepped into the furry paws of SVCC’s iconic mascot, Johnny Paws, and unknowingly launched a journey filled with school pride, personal growth, and a whole lot of jumping.

It all began at a new student orientation event, where Elizabeth Farrell, first donned the suit and brought Johnny to life. Since then, she has been the energy behind the mascot, electrifying crowds and embodying the pride and enthusiasm of SVCC. Whether at club events or campus celebrations, Johnny’s signature move—joyful jumping—has become a familiar and beloved sight to all.

“It’s really hot in that suit,” she admits with a laugh, “but it’s so much fun. I love how people light up when they see Johnny. Everyone wants a picture, and there’s this outstanding sense of school pride that fills the space.”

Maintaining the mystery of Johnny’s identity has been one of her biggest challenges. “Especially when you’re a blabbermouth like me,” she jokes, “it’s hard not to tell everyone!” Still, she embraced the role wholeheartedly, keeping the focus on the magic of the mascot rather than the person behind the paws.
