We are fast approaching our National Council Meeting this weekend. Look for the link to that in this edition. Anyone may attend. Chapter delegates in good standing may vote. National Council Chairman (and Chancellor) Billy Harrison is the emcee for this event. We look forward to seeing you Saturday morning.

Also in this edition is information on our in-person Trienniel Convention in Baltimore February 1-3.

For the football fans out there why not consider a Saturday cook-out for the men in your parish? Bring in a couple of televisions and watch the games, talk a little about our ministry and invite guests to come to your next meeting.

Just this week I had a conversation with another clergyperson interested in starting a chapter at his parish. Their informational meeting will be held later this month. We can continue to grow with your intentional prayers and conversations among those you know. The thing about our tenant of prayer is that it always produces more than we can ever hope or imagine when we pray for our ministry and God's hand in it.

Our National Council Meeting will be held on October 7 at 11 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

We will approve a tentative 2024 budget as well as approve a change in wording of our current bylaws--changing the word "pledge" to "Mission Dues" per a proposal from our membership committee and approval by the Executive Board.

While any member may attend this annual meeting, only those chapters that have filed an Annual Chapter Report for 2022, have the majority of their members in good standing on pledge status for 2023, and their appointed representative (also in good standing) from the chapter is registered as “National Council Member” are eligible to vote on any measures that come before the Council. Members to the National Board of Directors are also permitted a vote at the meeting. Absentee ballots were emailed to those eligible to vote and will be accepted by email at the National Office until Friday, October 6, 2023, at 4 p.m. Eastern time. Voting at the meeting will be by voice vote or by hand-raising over the virtual airway.

Christ Church, Elizabeth City, NC

Brothers at Christ Church in Elizabeth City, NC recently handed out flyers to congregants and neighbors in an 8 square block area around the church. The special invite was for a street carnival and church tour...welcoming neighbors to come visit the church. Free burgers and dogs and games for the kids! The Brotherhood chapter had a table display and several men stopped by to learn more about our ministry!! Brothers Bo Setliff, Rudge King, Speight Bunn, Frank Heath, Jeremiah Magnusson, Conrad Jones and Br. Fr. Daniel Cenci all helped out!

Good Shepherd, Friendswood, TX

Texas Hold'em Fundraiser

The Brotherhood of St Andrew at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Friendswood, Texas held a profitable Texas Hold’em Brotherhood fundraiser event on Saturday, September 23rd. The Brotherhood provided free dinner and drinks to all from 6-7PM and we started playing Texas Hold’em at 7PM. Dinner was Coney Island Hot Dogs, Lime & Dill Chicken, coleslaw, potato salad plus chips. We had 23 players signed up, but we had 7 no-shows plus 6 signups at the door, leaving us with 22 players who had all the fun. Brothers who helped, including Ronnie Vinson as our intrepid Time Keeper, John Morawski, Wiley Murrell and Peter Gilmour.

We had experienced and novice players attending, including Letica Morales who was among the players at the end. Several people commented on the good food and all the chicken was consumed! Everyone had a great time, and the proceeds will fund Brotherhood service projects around the church and our annual scholarship.

We ended about 9:30pm after 9 rounds of poker and it was time to count the chips. Lynz Costa, Joann Hocking’s granddaughter was the winner with $34,900 worth of chips and was awarded the first-place prize of a $50 Amazon gift card.

The Brotherhood wished to thank all who participated and helped, especially our dealers, Wiley Murrell (head), Jonah Isaac, Sid Jones, and Leah Jones. We could not have held this event without them!

The Brotherhood promotes the spread of Christ's Kingdom among men and youth through the disciplines of daily prayer, regular study, and continuous service. All men and youth are welcome to attend our meetings which are regularly held at 10:00am in Shepherd's Hall and on Zoom on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month.

From the September 29, 1923, issue of The Living Church

About fifty men, including half a dozen older boys, from nine churches of Norfolk and vicinity spent the weekend of September 16th in retreat at Williamsburg and Jamestown on the second annual pilgrimage to those ancient Virginia shrines, under the auspices of the Norfolk Assembly of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew.

The conference of churchmen was under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. William A.R. Goodwin, now of the William and Mary faculty, recently rector of St. Paul’s Church, Rochester, N.Y., and formerly rector and restorer of old Bruton Church, Williamsburg, Va. The theme of the meetings was The Divinity of Christ, and Our Fellowship With Him. On Saturday night was held in old Bruton a service of preparation for the early communion at Jamestown on the following morning. Dr. Goodwin, with his magnetism, earnestness, and spirituality, made very real to the men the nature of the Sacrament of which they were to partake at that historic spot.

At half past seven on Sunday morning, the men of the conference, with others of Williamsburg, knelt on the grass before the Robert Hunt memorial shrine at Jamestown for the service of Holy Communion, kneeling in the same spot where the early settlers in 1607 partook of the same Sacrament. With the sound of the river against the near shore and of the birds in the surrounding trees, the scene was reminiscent of those pioneer days of their church and nation. Instead of the gospel and epistle for the day, there were used the gospel and epistle for the Third Sunday after Trinity, which were said in that first celebration in America, when the Rev. Robert Hunt was the celebrant. The ancient silver chalice and paten of the old Jamestown Church were used in the service. At eleven o’clock the visitors attended in a body the service at old Bruton, and the sermon was appropriate to their pilgrimage, Mr. Goodwin being in charge in the absence of the Rev. E. Ruffin Jones, the rector.

The following telegram was sent from Williamsburg to the International Convention of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew’s that is about to assemble in Chicago:

“The Norfolk Assembly of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, in retreat at Williamsburg and Jamestown, where the Brotherhood made pilgrimage during the Norfolk Convention two years ago, sends greetings from these ancient shrines of our church and nation to the Brotherhood’s great convention at its birthplace, praying that the Chicago convention may be fruitful in good works.”

The Rev. William A.R. Goodwin (1869-1939) served as rector of Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, Virginia, from 1903 to 1909 and 1926 to 1938, and is known as the father of Colonial Williamsburg.

The Robert Hunt Shrine, a bas-relief sculpture in a large brick frame designed by Ralph Adams Cram, was erected in 1922 by the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Virginia to commemorate the first celebration of Holy Communion in the English-speaking colonies of what is now the United States. It still stands in the grounds of Historic Jamestown, part of the National Park Service’s Colonial National Historical Park.

Bro. Lyn Reavis hosts a monthly zoom "breakfast" meeting for Members At Large (MAL). Using the Brothers Andrew Devotional Handbook, the meeting ritual begins with our Chapter Devotional. His Life Line format focus on Study, Prayer, and a Commitment to Service in each members local parish or community. The Study usually considers a Saint from the church's liturgical calendar. It is sad to receive notification from Brother John Thompson-Quartey, our VP of Social Justice Ministry that he is stepping down from that position. As Br. JTQ writes,

"Good evening brother Conrad,

I pray this email finds you in great health. I am writing to inform you that I am unable to fulfill the rest of my term as Vice President for Social Justice.

I have recently taken a new position as the Director of the Episcopal Anglican Studies Program at Candler School of Theology, and am also serving as Interim Rector of a parish. Life has been rather hectic for me since my return from sabbatical, and on most nights, I am completely out of energy. You may have noticed that I have missed several board meetings because I am just unable to squeeze another night's meeting into my current schedule.

I am very sorry if this creates an inconvenience for you and the board, however, I don't believe I am being effective in my role on the national executive board, therefore, I must resign and allow someone else to assume the position.

I will remain committed to the Brotherhood and its mission, and when life becomes less hectic, I will assume a more active role.
