From the Director's Chair
By Tom Welch
Last week I had the privilege to assist with the Bicentenary celebrations at Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) in Alexandria. It was like a homecoming for so many across the church. Around 400 or so guests were on campus, many of whom are not only priests in the church but bishops or archbishops. Every day I was sporting our Brotherhood of St. Andrew vests or shirts. They ALWAYS sparked conversation. Pictured here with me is Bishop-Elect for the Diocese of Arkansas, Rev. John Harmon (Trinity Church/Washington, DC) sported a BStA lapel pin every day! Meaningful conversations with bishops from West Virginia, Virginia, West Tennessee, Indianapolis, Texas along with a host of other clergy let me know we are “on the right” track with our efforts to return BStA chapters to every seminary we can.
Of note, this year 2/3 of the seminarians at VTS are female. Research has shown that is pretty much a norm across the church these days. Trade journals indicate by 2035 60-70% of clergy in the Episcopal Church will be female. On the whole, the majority of people attending church are also female. This amplifies the opportunity for us to share our story of why our affinity ministry is so vital in the life of the church. The good news is these clergy, male and female, are becoming more aware of us and our efforts in evangelism. ALL of them are looking under every rock and in every corner to move forward. Our 140-year track record shows reason for incorporation into the life of their parishes every year. This edition of LLA will share just some of the reasons why.
To that end, next weekend we are offering an area wide meeting of interested men in and out of the Brotherhood to a workshop at the Mercer School of Theology on cathedral grounds in Garden City, Long Island. It is open to anyone in or out of the Diocese of Long Island. So, for those in the area who can, come join us! Here’s the link:

In Case You Missed It!
Our 2023 National Council Meeting was held virtually October 7, where two business items were approved by your delegates.
- A 2024 Operating Budget was approved and will be reviewed again prior to the Triennial in February 2024 once we evaluate our revenue from Membership renewals (due by Dec 31, 2023)
- Our Bylaws were edited to replace the term "pledges" with "Ministry Dues" to better reflect the intentions of our requests for membership renewals from our Sr., Jr. and Associate Members.

Jesus was the greatest leader of all time. His impact on the world has lasted for over 2000 years and counting. Thousands followed Him as He traveled around with His 12 disciples and healed and preached and taught LOVE in all He did.
The Lead Like Jesus program encompasses Prayer, Study, and Service in one succinct package. It fits perfectly into our Brotherhood Mission to bring Men and Youth to a closer walk with Jesus.
What an opportunity to learn from a program created by Tony Blanchard and Phil Hodges to Lead Like Jesus!
“Don’t delay! Register today or you might miss this opportunity to get this great training with the Brotherhood refunding your registration fee.”
The Lead Like Jesus (LLJ) Encounter program is being offered to Brotherhood members Nov 14, 15, 16 (4 hours per day 11am-3pm Eastern). LLJ aligns with our Brotherhood concepts, and we wish to extend this opportunity to our Brothers.
Through very generous donations, the Brotherhood will fully refund the $199 registration fee (the public price) for the first 20 members who register and complete the three-day Encounter in November.

Brotherhood of St. Andrew Awards Scholarships
The Brotherhood of St Andrew at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Friendswood (Houston) Texas was pleased to award Jonah Isaak a $500 scholarship for 2023 during our 10:30 a.m. service on October 15. Jonah is the son of David and Laurel Isaak and he is currently attending the University of Houston as an economics major. While continuing his education, he strives to represent his faith and congregation by treating every person with respect and dignity. Jonah was baptized at Christ Church Cathedral and has attended Good Shepherd since 2014. He served as interim Parish assistant during our search for a new Rector. He has also served at Lord of the Streets (LOTS) to serve breakfast with fellow parishioners.
The Brotherhood wishes to thank everyone who has participated in our fundraising events to make this possible. This would not have been possible without your support. Our next fundraiser event is smoked turkeys for Thanksgiving.
The Brotherhood spreads Christ's kingdom among men and youth by daily prayer, scripture study and service. We meet the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month at 10am in person and on Zoom in Shepherd's Hall. Our next meeting is Saturday, 10/21 in Shepherd’s Hall starting at 10am. Contact me per below to join our email list and help spread Christ’s kingdom.

Recognizing Our
Sustaining Members
Sustaining Members refers to Brothers who have made a commitment to offer a monthly (or quarterly) donation to the Brotherhood over and above their regular Sr. Membership dues or a Life Membership.
Many of us do make additional donations throughout the year (Ex: special appeals, purchase of the Sweepstakes tickets, etc.), but this a pledged commitment of recurring donations in a regular, consistent recurring donation throughout the year. It represents a commitment to financially support our ministry on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
Thanks be to these Brothers for their commitment to financially supporting our ministry
throughout the year.
Br. James Miller, Br. John Streeter, Br. David Adams,
Br. Evans Clements, Rev. Br. Ellis Clifton, Br. Nick Cox, Br. Cecil Buxo, Br. Walt Joyce, Br. Leland Metheney,
Br. Louis Surles, Br. John Blossom, Br. Eric Fisher,
Rev. Br. John Thompson-Quartey, Br. Arthur Simpson, Br. Oliver Evans, Br. Peter Gilmour, Br. Ken Holloway, Br. Roy Benavides, Br. Conrad Jones, Br. Ed Milbrada, Br. Ray Talbird, Br. George Shumard, Br. Jeff Butcher, Br. Tom Simpson, Br. Dick Hooper, Br. Eric Haralson, Br. Tom Welch, Rev. Br. Ed Bartle, Br. David Penley,
Br. John Fitzgerald
Can you commit to a $5 or $10/month (or more) donation to this ministry and community of men that you belong to? That's less than a lunch at McDonald's! It is important, if not critical, to the ongoing vitality of our ministry to men and youth. If you'd like to discuss more, email me by clicking here: conrad.jones@brothersandrew.net
Sign up today and have your appreciation gift
sent to you!

Social Justice Ministry
It is sad to receive notification from Brother John Thompson-Quartey, our VP of Social Justice Ministry that he is stepping down from that position. As Br. JTQ writes,
"Good evening brother Conrad,
I pray this email finds you in great health. I am writing to inform you that I am unable to fulfill the rest of my term as Vice President for Social Justice.
I have recently taken a new position as the Director of the Episcopal Anglican Studies Program at Candler School of Theology, and am also serving as Interim Rector of a parish. Life has been rather hectic for me since my return from sabbatical, and on most nights, I am completely out of energy. You may have noticed that I have missed several board meetings because I am just unable to squeeze another night's meeting into my current schedule.
I am very sorry if this creates an inconvenience for you and the board, however, I don't believe I am being effective in my role on the national executive board, therefore, I must resign and allow someone else to assume the position.
I will remain committed to the Brotherhood and its mission, and when life becomes less hectic, I will assume a more active role.
With deep regrets,
JTQ"
We offer prayers of thanksgiving to Br. JTQ as he is called to other service. His presence will surely be missed in leading this ministry but we all wish him Godspeed in all that lies ahead for him and thanks for his volunteerism within the Brotherhood!
