St. Luke’s Brotherhood Chapter / San Antonio

Episcopal Diocese of West Texas

Wrapping the Visitor in Hospitality

David Schrantz with Episcopal Diocese of West Texas

Immigration Director Flor Saldivar

“Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality?’ ….”

(Matthew 25:37-38)

St. Luke's Chapter Director David Schrantz and the chapter in San Antonio are responding to the need for basic necessities as the area responds to immigrant needs as they pass through the Plaza de Paz Migrant Center. While the center has showers for guests, towels are needed to dry their bodies. The Brotherhood Chapter has provided over 100 bath towels for use.

How can you live into Matthew 25 in your community?

WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?

"There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all." -1 Corinthians 12:4 (NLT)

Now I know some of you immediately saw in your mind Tina Tuner singing this hit from back in 1984 when reading the title. It was the #1 single “What’s Love Got to Do With It” on Billboard Magazine for three weeks in a row. What is also noteworthy is with that feat is this. At age 44 Tina became the oldest artist ever to make it to #1. Hold that thought for the next few minutes.

We all have gifts provided by God. Some are physical talents like musical or athletic and others are spiritual. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 speaks to this. What it does NOT say is that only people between the ages of XX and XX can share gifts with others. Tina Turner made inroads among a field of colleagues half her age. Among our members we have a lens a little more seasoned than generations below us.

Since our last publication many college students are now graduating, and k-12 students are weeks away from the school year coming to a close. What has this to do with our mission and ministry? These graduates, college undergraduate and graduate students are among the loneliest generation. We at the Brotherhood will be talking again this summer with one of our webinar speakers from late last year on this topic of loneliness, Susan Mettes. Stay tuned to this newsletter on how we can continue to connect with generations below 40 years of age with the generations of those above 60.

One way to connect the generations has always been music. A couple of my classmates at Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) are connecting music with all generations. In the video clip below there are several things that are noteworthy about connecting the generations and how some of our membership can do it. In this video you will find my fellow classmate Joshua Duncan (VTS MDiv ’26), in blue pants and sunglasses and the other, David Smith (MDiv ’25) singing at David’s home parish, St. James on Lafayette Square in Baltimore. At the very front of the video talking is BStA National Council Member and fellow St. James parishioner Vincent Miller. Br. Vincent is a deeply spiritual man, one whom I count as one of my most treasured friendships over the years. What’s unique about this church? It’s where Most Rev. Michael Curry was serving as rector when he became a Life Member of BStA. This parish celebrates their 200th anniversary next month.

Look at how one generation can connect with another. As you do, imagine ways to “think outside of the box” connecting your generation with other generations. It often takes looking to see God at work in our lives through another lens at a view we might not normally give a second glance. This happens with me all the time living on campus with so many about half my age. The “good news” about being among such a Jesus-loving group of individuals daily is coming to understand one another better. We must be intentional about that. No, most of us couldn’t possibly have such interaction daily, but we can interact with intension. It takes courage, prayer and ACTION steps. Those three tenants, courage, prayer and action, are my daily prayer for you as we approach Pentecost. May the fire of the Holy Spirit fill you as it does the generations at St. James!
