APPLY NOW! CSSA's Summer in the City Internship

Build advocacy skills, engage in community-based research, and explore Cleveland through an internship with CSSA’s 2023 JCU Summer in the City Internship Program!
The JCU Summer in the City Internship Program provides an opportunity for students to engage in, advocacy, service, solidarity, and social change through this internship. These paid internships will enable qualified students to explore the systems and structures behind many of the current social issues of our times. This ten-week, full-time, paid immersive experience will place students with a nonprofit community organization in Cleveland involved in advocacy work addressing these social issues. Students will use their internship experience to prepare a research project for the organization that promotes social change. Interns also receive a $4,800 (+$500 for the research component) stipend for their work. Internships are open to all sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduates and graduate students.

In partnership with the Campus Vote Project, JCU Democracy Fellows play a critical role in motivating their peers and the campus community to take part in nonpartisan democratic engagement activities. This position spans Spring 2023 and Fall 2023, with the possibility for renewal. Fellows are compensated with a $700 spring stipend and a $900 fall stipend. Paid Federal Work-Study Opportunity: Carroll Reads
Carroll Reads is a federally-funded tutoring program aimed at helping children in elementary grades develop reading skills. If you are looking for a paid federal work-study position, this is a great opportunity to work with children in the community. Tutors are paid $12.00 per hour for tutoring twice/week, approximately 5 hours per week.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting one-on-one tutoring sessions with students using educator-provided materials.
- Building rapport and cultivating enthusiasm with the children.
- Assisting children in developing their reading and writing skills to reach grade-level expectations.
- Weekly documenting and reviewing student data with the Carroll Reads Site Coordinators to gauge the effectiveness of interventions.
- Regularly checking in with Carroll Reads Coordinators and Student Liaisons for continued training and assistance in tutoring.
- Committing to tutoring two days per week, for ten weeks, over the course of the semester.
