30th Anniversary WPS Volunteer Awards
The 30 th Annual WPS Volunteer Awards were held on the morning of Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the KI Convention Center. The awards program is the result of a partnership between Wisconsin Public Service and The Volunteer Center of Brown County. The WPS Volunteer Awards recognize and celebrate individuals and groups who volunteer in the community for a wide variety of nonprofits. Over 1,700 local volunteers were nominated for one of eight awards sponsored by local businesses. The event is the largest in Brown County that honors the impact that volunteers have in the community. The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation joined in supporting the event by a Community Impact sponsorship increasing the award amounts to $1,000 for the recipients and $500 for the runners-up, which are gifted to the nonprofits of the winner’s choice. The Youth winners receive personal scholarships. Check upcoming editions of the Volunteer Connect to see this years recipients and runners up.

It is National Volunteer Week!
April 15-21
National Volunteer Week is a nationwide initiative to recognize and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent, voice and support to causes they care about in their community, and to inspire others to find ways to take action that creates change.

What inspires you to serve in our community?
Volunteer of the Week
Cynthia Guevara is our Volunteer of the Week!

Cynthia Guevara has been a volunteer for more than 32 years (unofficially 38 years). Cynthia has lived as a volunteer in her community of Green Bay for over 30 years.

In 1986, Cynthia founded Heaven's Touch out of her home, here in Green Bay. Cynthia felt the need to help touch the lives of children and single pregnant/parenting women who are in despair. "The mission of Heaven's Touch is to restore, rebuild, and redirect the lives of pregnant/parenting women and their children, who seek change due to trials and trauma; to offer assistance, hope, and love; to become self sufficient, successful, live life productively, and become an asset to the community. In accomplishing this goal, we try to meet four primary needs: housing, parenting, education and employment" (Heaven's Touch). In 2001, Heaven's Touch became a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit. Cynthia continues to serve the women and children of Heaven's Touch 24/7. A previous client of Heaven's Touch has now been volunteering for Heaven's Touch for over 22 years and thanks Cynthia for forever changing her son and her life.

Recently, Cynthia has also served as President of the Western Corridor Neighborhood Association (WCNA). The WCNA was formed in October 2015. Boundaries are from 12th Street to Military Avenue and West Mason to Shawano Avenue, with over 1250 parcels, which is the largest neighborhood association in Green Bay. When they nominated the President for WCNA, there was a unanimous nomination for Cynthia Guevara. Cynthia did not express an interest in being the president, instead she sat quietly in the meeting and listened to all issues at hand that were brought to the table of her neighbors' concerns. Cythia's leadership shines in everything she puts her hand to. Cynthia has love and compassion to help those less fortunate. As the President of the WCNA, Cynthia did everything by the rules. She is honest, is excellent in every detail, organized and business-minded. As president of the WCNA, Cynthia aimed to make her neighborhood a better place to live.

Thank you, Cynthia, for having the best interest of others needs at heart and for continuing to serve in our community!

Join the Movement: Become an Advocate with the Sexual Assault Center!
Are you looking for a way to stand with survivors and make a lasting impact on our community? The Sexual Assault Center that serves Brown, Oconto, Door, & Marinette Counties, is looking for individuals to join their volunteer team! No experience is necessary. All advocates receive extensive training prior to working with victims of Sexual Violence. Our new training program prepares advocates and is more flexible for those with busy schedules. Self-paced learning modules combined with on-site training and shadowing experiences prepare advocates for this work. Advocates play an important role in victims’ healing process as they not only field incoming hotline calls through hotline, but also respond to hospitals or police stations to provide immediate support and information. Interns provide additional support and legal advocacy. Volunteers sign up for two shifts each month that work with their schedule and attend monthly meetings with other advocates, to maintain protocols and expand knowledge.

Available shifts:
Weekday Nights: 5pm-7am
Weekend Days: 7am-7pm
Weekend Nights: 7pm-7am

Next on-site training dates in May!

Mission:  Prematurity is the #1 killer of babies in the United States. We are working to change that and help more moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies. From polio to prematurity, the March of Dimes has focused on researching the problems that threaten our children and finding ways to prevent them.

March of Dimes fights for the health of all moms and babies, advocating for policies to protect them and working to radically improve the healthcare they receive. March of Dimes is pioneering research to find solutions and empowers families with the knowledge and tools to have healthier pregnancies. By uniting communities, March of Dimes is building a brighter future for us all.
