The Landrum Family is our Volunteer of the Week!
Homelessness is an issue for many families in our community. This means that there are children living in unstable conditions and they may not feel supported by their community. These children need to be told that they matter to our community - the Landrum Family is doing that by spending quality time reading to them.
The Landrum Family had an idea to help the homeless families in Brown County through the power of books. They wanted to share their love of reading with these families. The Landrum’s created a library and reading program at Freedom House. They share the reading program with the families at Freedom House throughout the year by reading aloud to the children. They also develop and lead an activity that outlines the story. The family has expanded the program to also include board games for the older children to play after the reading program. Their shared passion for this program has seen it from its creation to the lively program it is today at Freedom House.
The families look forward to the Reading Program on Monday nights. The Landrum's focus is on building relationships with the children so they look forward to reading together and creating together. They know they are cared for and it has really spurred an interest in books for them. It is also inspiring parents to spend quality time with their children reading books, as well! It has been a great way to get the children excited about reading and give them a creative outlet to express what they may be feeling in this time of homelessness. The Landrum's are wonderful mentors in the way that they teach kindness and patience while they spend time reading with the children.
Thank you Landrum Family for nurturing the homeless families in our community!

March of Dimes mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
Until recently, premature birth and birth defects, which affect 23 million babies worldwide, were not recognized as significant public health priorities by international health agencies, governments or donor organizations. Lack of evidence on the global, regional and country toll, misperceptions about causes of newborn deaths, and limited public awareness led to the inattention to these problems.
The March of Dimes has worked hard to change this. In 1998, the March of Dimes established its Global Programs to bring the high global toll of birth defects and preterm birth to the attention of governments, policy makers and donor organizations and to offer solutions in response. In the past 15 years, Global Programs has partnered with local organizations in 33 developing countries on four continents to strengthen prevention and care through development of surveillance systems, education of health professionals, raising public awareness and strengthening parent/patient and other grass-roots organizations.
Global Programs conducts its work through mission alliances-organizations that share the March of Dimes mission to improve birth outcomes, in a targeted country or region. Within the partnership, the complementary strengths of the March of Dimes and the partner organization are mobilized to carry out surveillance and health in a country or region of the world in a cost-effective and efficient manner. Each partnership becomes an integral component of March of Dimes Global Programs activities.
Please visit March of Dimes website for more information
