Ashley Reif is our Volunteer of the Week!
Ashley began volunteering at the Brown County Central Library in 2011, when she turned 12, the earliest age that students can volunteer at the library. Since then, she has steadily increased her volunteer hours and level of involvement at the library. To date, Ashley has logged more than 320 hours. Ashley does not see herself as a leader, but she does lead by example. She does not simply volunteer because she has to, but she does so because she enjoys it. The fact that she has such a varied number of volunteer experiences under her belt at a young age is a testament to her character and work ethic and the individuals she has worked with are better off thanks to her service.
Throughout the year, Ashley helps out in a variety of ways at the library, including: helping with special story times and programs by wearing a book character costume, preparing and handing out treats, preparing and working with children on craft projects, assisting with bulletin boards or playing a part in a skit or puppet show. In the summer, Ashley is a regular volunteer for the Summer Reading Program sign-in table, registering hundreds of children at the kick-off event and handing out prizes to kids as they reach reading goals throughout the summer. She also volunteers for some of the larger off-site events that the library hosts, such as Library Morning at the Brown County Fair, the Library Event at the Neville Public Museum, and several Giant Early Learning Play Dates. In 2016, Ashley was invited to join the board of the Friends of the Brown County Library as its first and only teen representative. This year, she is in college and is on the board as as a regular board member.
While Ashley's skills are impressive, perhaps the thing that the library appreciates most about Ashley is her maturity and dedication, treating her volunteer hours as a job rather than just something to pass the time or a project to gain service hours. Over her six-plus years, the library has seen very few volunteers exhibit the commitment that Ashley has: always showing up on time, never complaining about tasks, going the extra mile on projects, asking for clarification if needed, offering to do additional work and showing genuine interest in both the projects with and the children they serve.
Thank you, Ashley, for your continued commitment and dedication to the library!
