Unity Generations Volunteers are our Volunteers of the Week!
Each day in our community families are touched by death and the feelings that follow the loss of a loved one. These families are made up of both children, adults, and the unique relationships they had with a loved one. Unity, Wisconsin's first and the community's only nonprofit hospice and palliative care provider, knows first-hand how critical illness and the loss of loved ones affects families each day. Unity recognized there was a gap in our community, as such, and developed Generations in 2009 and continues to facilitate Generations monthly. Generations is the only grief support group program in Green Bay designed specifically to provide emotional support for families with children between the ages of 6-18 who have faced the loss of a loved one. Children at Generations have experienced the death of a loved one by suicide, sudden death, or a lengthy illness. Families can participate in Generations as long as they feel the need for ongoing grief support.
Generations meets the second Thursday of the month from 5:30-7:30pm. The evening begins with the group sharing a complimentary meal and then divides into groups held concurrently for parents/guardians and children/teens. In the children and teen groups, Unity Grief Counselors and volunteers plan and facilitate activities that are centered on specific grief tasks. This allows children and teens to learn about grief, develop ways to cope, and remember their loved ones. In the adult group, a Unity Grief Counselor and volunteer facilitate conversation where the adults can talk about their grief as well as their children's grief. The adults, children and teens often find it helpful to be around others their age who have also experienced loss and share in the understanding they are not alone in this difficult journey. The evening concludes with the children and adults coming back together to read a supportive poem and saying the name of their loved ones for increased emotional support.
Without key volunteers, Unity could not have met the needs of grieving families in our community. Not only do these Generations volunteers help plan and facilitate each group, but they also prepare and cook/bring parts of the meal, and they also take the time to clean up and process the night. They are committed to talking about what they experienced with the children and adults because it can be intense to hear these, often tragic, stories of loss. Because people don't want children to hurt, they try to fix a child's grief by putting a band-aid on it, but Generations volunteers are brave enough to give the children the space and freedom to express themselves and their grief.
Thank you, Unity Generations Volunteers, for your dedication and consistency in helping those who have experienced loss!
