Caragan Olles is our volunteer of the week as well as our
WPS Volunteer Award Youth Recipient!
Diagnosed in the 3rd grade with dyslexia, Caragan struggled for many years but after many years of intensive, phonics based tutoring, it got easier for her to read, spell, and retrieve words, but still sees weaknesses because of her disability. One in five people are affected by dyslexia, and most don't have the means to get the right tutoring or worse yet, they get into programs that aren't helping them. Because of her dyslexia and the benefit she received through tutoring, Caragan was motivated to found Bright Young Dyslexics in March 2013!
Caragan is the Co-Founder and Co-President of Bright Young Dyslexics and has so far raised over $65,000 to fund tutoring and assistive technology for K-12 dyslexic students in Wisconsin. Since founding the organization, Caragan puts in over 200 volunteer hours each year. Her work includes organizing fund raising events, public speaking, dyslexia in-services, conducting dyslexia simulations, updating social media sites and more. For the past 3 years, she has led their Youth Advisory Board which consists of 32 area middle and high school students who help to advance the mission of Bright Young Dyslexics.
A major struggle dyslexics face is the lack of understanding. Many people don't know what dyslexia is and erroneously think it means that dyslexics read backwards. Worse yet, others say dyslexia is not real. When Caragan was diagnosed with dyslexia, Northeastern Wisconsin was called the "black hole" of dyslexia. Bright Young Dyslexics has made great progress towards de-mystifying dyslexia and taking the stigma away from the diagnosis. Caragan says, "I feel good about myself knowing that I am helping kids in need and making a difference in my world.
I may not be able to educate the entire world about dyslexia, but I can educate one person at a time, and every person I educate, brings us closer to everyone understanding the dyslexia is real!"
Thank you Caragan, for making a difference in our community and for giving others with dyslexia a fighting chance!
