Joyce Poister is our Volunteer of the Week
as well as our WPS Volunteer Education Award Runner-Up
!
Joyce Poister supplies individualized attention to students with disabilities to promote learning of life skills. These skills are needed in the daily life of individuals with disabilities to gain confidence and to live as independently as possible. Joyce teaches and reinforces valuable skills that others may take for granted. In the lives of the students that Joyce mentors at Syble Hopp School, the impact will last a lifetime.
Joyce has been a volunteer at Syble Hopp for the last 9 years. She works with the students to gain functional reading, functional math skills and social skills. Functional reading includes learning to read for communication, safety and leisure. Joyce provides one-on-one support to students learning community signs, safety signs, menu words and word and sentence building. She reviews personal information (i.e., first and last name, address, phone number, date of birth, and parents' names) with students to aid in safety and/or applying for a volunteer or work position. Joyce also mentors a group of students who interact with younger students at school and act as peer models. Both groups are winning in this situation, as the high school students read and work on projects with younger students on a weekly basis with Joyce's guidance.
Joyce has been a great asset to Syble Hopp in providing quality-individualized instruction to the high school students with disabilities, to help them grow as young adults. Joyce's past career as a Speech and Language Therapist enhances her ability to engage with students. Her efforts have not only helped guide students to become more self-confident and independent, but have also positively affected the lives of all students she encounters with her positive outlook on life.
Thank you, Joyce, for striving to make a difference in the lives of those you mentor at Syble Hopp!
