The Engineer and Conductor Train Crew at the National Railroad Museum are our Volunteers of the Week!
Education is a major part of the National Railroad Museum's role within the community. The train crew is a part of that effort, bringing their knowledge and experiences to help educate the public about railroading history. The train crew interacts with the public, creating an enjoyable educational experience. Without these dedicated volunteers, the daily seasonal train rides would come to a standstill.
The conductors are the primary safety officer on board the train. They ensure the passengers are safe and oversee train movements. While the train is in motion, the conductors give a tour and talk about various pieces in the museum's collection. The engineer is responsible for the safe operation of the locomotive. Once the train stops, the engineer explains the mechanical how’s and whys of the locomotives.
For many visitors, this is their first time on a train and the train crew makes it a memorable and positive experience. There are also many visitors who have worked on the railroad for their entire lives and the volunteers allow them to relive their experiences and share their stories, creating an important interpersonal impact.
Thank you, Train Crew, for your help in keeping the train running!
