volunteeroftheweek Volunteer of the Week
In Memory of John Berger who passed away in February of 2017.

John was an active member with St. Vincent de Paul for over 23 years! He was included in a group that would volunteer in pairs to visit those in need in their homes and offer customized assistance and service to them. St. Vincent de Paul refers to these volunteers as "Vincentians." He regularly attended a variety of Vincentian meetings and trainings and served in two leadership roles.

John's volunteer efforts were always steady and on-going. Throughout his 23 years, he accumulated over 3,000 hours of volunteer service in store, cashiering and bagging as well as behind the scenes in an area called "rough sort," or "bric-brac" - essentially separating donations into departmental categories. These hours do not reflect the multitude of hours volunteering as a Vincentian or in his leadership roles as conference secretary/treasurer or head of district Conference Affairs Committee.

Last fiscal year, St. Vincent de Paul provided an approximate average of $300 per family of monetary aide to those in need in Brown County. John was a volunteer who visited those in need in his conference area in Howard. John reached out and he listened with his heart wide open. He helped multitudes of families over the years overcome a personal or financial hurdle. John led others to lead with their hearts and was a wonderful friend to the poor.

John was a volunteer willing to tackle what needed to be done for the good of the organization. A few years ago, John updated St. Vincent de Paul's Street Guide, which is a comprehensive booklet that lists all streets in the Green Bay area and assigns them to a conference, the basic unit of the Vincentian organization. For that project, John took a city map and painstakingly compared the streets on the map to those listed in the most current Vincentian Street Guide and found over 500 new streets. He then assigned each new street to a conference based on it's location. This Street Guide is an essential tool to the St. Vincent de Paul organization. When those in need seek help through St. Vincent de Paul's centralized Personal Service Center, this guide determines which conference will visit them and deliver the help they need.

It is with great sadness that during the writing of this nomination, John unexpectedly passed away from complications from a fall during hunting. St. Vincent de Paul would like to honor John on all that he has accomplished over his 23 years with their organization.
