The Volunteer Sexual Assault Advocates at the Sexual Assault Center of Family Services of NEW serve a variety of clients and interact with victims of many types of abuse. They provide emotional support for victims and their families in crisis situations, helping to de-escalate the emotions and provide all available options at that time. They also provide emergency legal support, including reporting abuse to Child Protective Services, preparing victims for giving a statement to law enforcement, and supporting them through that process. Volunteer advocates also help victims and their families understand what a Sexual Assault Nurse Examination entails and support them through that as well. These services help victims and their families know they have options, and that they will not be alone regardless of the path that is taken.

The impact of an advocate during an initial interaction is very crucial. In Brown County, when a victim presents to a hospital or police station, an advocate is automatically called in to provide support that other agencies may not be providing. Sexual assault advocates are primarily focused on providing continuous support services throughout the victims' healing process.

assaultThe Sexual Assault Center of Family Services is looking for interns and volunteers to work as Sexual Assault Advocates in Brown County. No experience is necessary; all advocates receive extensive training prior to working with victims of Sexual Violence. Advocates play an important role in victims' healing process as they not only field incoming hotline calls, but also respond to hospitals or police stations to provide immediate support and information. Interns provide additional support and legal advocacy. Both commit to two shifts each month that work with their schedule and attend monthly meetings with other advocates to maintain protocols and expand knowledge. Their next training starts May 4, so contact them soon for more details about this opportunity! For more information, contact Chelsey Steffens at 920-436-8899 or  ctingley@familyservicesnew.org.
